Encounters with the horrible book

We did not like the book overall. There was too much factual information which interrupted the flow of the story. It was hard to understand who the narrator was and the ending was not very clear. However, we learned a lot about the views of the conservationists' of the world. Also, the negative effects of developing undisturbed land, building dams, and mining mountainous regions was also learned.

That smell of optimism, the inspiration, the wonderful artwork. This book is amazing, Every day I pick a quote as a topic to reflect upon and write down how I can achieve my goals or apply it to everyday life. This book is fantastic!

Really enjoy the author, but this one didn't work for me.

I *loved* Start With Why. It's one of my favorite "business books. I also really enjoyed Leaders Eat Last. I get what Mr. Sinek is going for, here, but it didn't resonate with me. Maybe if I hadn't read his other books, this would be an interesting introduction to some of the themes he focuses on, but it didn't communicate the importance of those themes as clearly as his writing, and it felt oversimplified.

I'm still very much looking forward to what he does next, which is why I don't want to leave a lower review - but I'd highly recommend getting Start With Why over this, and once you read that, and Leaders Eat Last, this book doesn't really bring anything new to the table.

NOT A STORY - THIS IS A QUOTE BOOK

Disappointed - pretty much just pages of SS quotes that sort of go along with nice illustrations that could tell a story. THIS IS NOT AT ALL A FABLE OR A STORY- I was expecting a picture book (elementary school style) with a bit of a story, characters, plot that could be used with kids and staff- like a mentor Text- A metaphor of sorts, or examples we could connect to leadership- was hoping to use it with kids learning about leadership then have them connect the story with leadership quotes etc. This "story book" has NO story... the illustrations have the potential to tell a wonderful story with a true adventure plot structure - so I might just use the pics and have kids write the story... pretty disjointed, no good structure...

For Experienced Woodworkers Only

The beginning of the book details out techniques, tools, and design philosophy behind these pieces. That kind of information is always interesting to me. The first two projects have some direction to them. After that, you're on your own with only a shop drawing and a cutlist to guide you. The designs the book has is great, but it is assuming you have a solid background in woodworking. I'm currently building the nesting tables from the book as part of a woodworking class at my local art center. If it weren't for having someone with years of experience guiding me through this project I would not be successful.

Most of these projects are also made to be assembled out of solid wood, not plywood. (Although maybe that's my limited experience talking.) If you're looking to build your own Mid-Century Style furniture, but need a bit more guidance, I recommend Handmade Modern.

It's a decent book but not the end all of ...

It's a decent book but not the end all of design books. Leans heavily towards the Danish designers. the drawings are Ok but leave some things to be desired. as an example the chair featured on the cover while having many measurements lack the angles needed for the legs and back. one has to guess and try to figure the angle by combining several other measurements. the same holds true for any piece that tapers. the botom measurement is given but many times the top measurement is missing or is buried somewhere.

The book provides only the most broad-strokes study of mid-century modern furniture. The drawings seem to be inaccurate or incomplete (I noticed at least one drawing had pieces entirely missing from the cutlist). Another annoyance is that the renderings of the projects have the grain-lines oriented in the wrong direction. If the pieces were built in the fashion illustrated, they'd be weakened.

Focused Worship

I was so pleased to receive this book for our children. I have been making up church papers for my own children for years, so I was excited to get new ideas. Instead of doing the same thing each week, there are several different ideas for keeping your children focused on the preaching: Scripture Scribe has them writing out the Scripture passages that are read, Key Word Alphabet has them listening for key words to go with each of the 26 letters of the alphabet, Key Word Search allows you to write down words that you think they might hear in the sermon and they add tally marks each time they hear the word, Sermon Illustrator gives three boxes for "drawing" the sermon, and there are several more options to choose from. There is also a Prayer Meeting sheet which gives the children an opportunity to have their own prayer list for our Wednesday prayer meeting. There is a Missionary Moments sheet for when missionaries come through your church and your children can record what they learned about the missionary and their country. Using SNFK has also revealed to me which children need to work on staying alert to the message the whole way through. Jill has done an excellent job in putting together a fun way for children to stay focused in church.

I bought this for my 3 boys ages 10, 11, and 12. They enjoy church more with something to keep their attention on the sermon. It also gives us a way to discuss the sermon after church and allow them to ask questions. I LOVE this book.

I am a big fan of Margaret Wise Brown. She writes beautifully and collaborates with wonderful artists. This book in particular has wonderful art. "Dreamy" to look at. I highly recommend.

This book is great for calming down at night. It is a little repetitive with very smooth colored pictures that my daughter loves. She counts the animals on each page.

Structuralist view of 'the fantastic'

Those interested in the structuralist criticism of the 1960s-70s will find the most joy here, with Todorov applying the rigorous structuralist stance to one of literature's most fascinating genres. His demolition of Northrop Frye's approach to 'genre' in Chapter 1 is still cogent after thirty years (and an amusing read in its own right), but it's Todorov's chapters on the 'themes of the fantastic', and his conclusion on its role in literature generally, which are most compelling. This is not, however, an easy read. As Robert Scholes notes in his foreword, "neither structuralism itself nor poetics in general is noted for its ability to charm readers." You don't say. Fortunately, Todorov uses many examples from well known fantastic texts - such as 'The Arabian Nights' and the works of Edgar Alan Poe - and also from lesser known French works which will have you rushing out to the antiquarian bookstore to hunt them down. You can accept or reject the structuralist position - but if nothing else, this book will open up a whole new world of 'fantastic' novels for you to enjoy.

What Todorov Means!

This book is a great achievement in criticism, but one should be warned that Todorov is not talking about elves and dragons when he uses the term "Fantastic." In this book Todorov advances his definition of the fantastic as a "hesitation" or inability to decide whether events in a narrative are natural or supernatural. Thus, the book deals more with straight supernatural fiction, than with what we usually think of as "fantasy" fiction. All in all, Todorov is insightful and his book is a great companion to anyone who enjoys French, English, or American supernatural fiction.

It provides a didatic systematization of the fantastic, by dividing it into the marvelous and the uncanny. This system of definiton is of much help for researchers of literature, like myself, who sometimes get lost amidst so many prolix approaches. Definitelly a must-have to gothic literature aficionados interested in a deeper understanding of authors such Lovecraft and Poe.
