Meh

I was looking for a book on color theory and mixing colors so I thought I would give this book a try. Ms. Edwards needs to get a little more up to date on her neurological information as there is no evidence of people being more in the "right-brain or "left brain". Both sides of the brain are in action when we are being creative, otherwise we would likely be having a stroke! She has also created a new color system that is somewhat gimmicky. It would make it extremely hard for a newer student to apply this and then try to learn the tried and true concepts of the older Master's at the same time. I bought a book from a less egocentric author by buying Gurney's 'Color and Light' and learned more from it than any other book on color I have bought to date.

Delightful. A must-have for anyone who enjoys any visual arts

Anyone with any interest in visual arts will get something out of this book. I do makeup as a hobby on the side, and I have learned some awesome things from this book. Color theory benefits anyone who paints, draws, does makeup, makes films, etc. It changes how you look at things once you understand how colors really work. There is actually a science to it and it is delightful.

A Must for All Artists

At last a book on Colour that explains clearly, with exercises for practice, the various aspects of colour use. Finding the values of colour on a black & white grid I have always found impossible. Now it's clearer.

Betty Edwards writes clearly, obviously loves her subject and is accustomed to imparting information to students at all levels.
Furthermore, the font size in this book is great and easy to read, particularly for mature aged artists.
I would recommend this book as a must for all artists from beginners to those more experienced who have, like me, struggle to master the nuances of getting the correct value in colour.

A Valuable Firsthand Account

An apparent reprint of a 19th century edition, this book contains what appear to be many of the original errors of the typesetters of the period as well as some archaic conventions (e.g., the use of open quote marks on every line of a continuing text). The font itself is somewhat blurred and hard to read and the book lacks any scholarly overview, putting the text into perspective. Still with this book we have a birdseye view of how things looked to a contemporary author who was in a position to observe the political tug-of-war around the issue of slavery firsthand.

Joshua Giddings, the author, was a well known politician and abolitionist in his day and served in Congress for a number of terms where he was witness to the great slavery debates of the era and ardent spokesperson against what he termed the "slave power" in American political and economic life. Describing the causes and proceedings of the conflict in Florida which culminated in the Second Seminole War, he notes how that war was mainly fought at the instigation of southern slave interests, initially in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Florida, with the object of seizing the population of escaped slaves and their descendants who had fled to Florida while it was still under Spanish rule to gain sanctuary from the slavery to which they or their forebears had been subjected in the American colonies (later the American states).

Giddings blames southern fear of free blacks disrupting their own slave holdings and, even more, their venal desire to obtain slaves from among that black population living in the wilderness of Florida under the auspices of the loosely affiliated Seminole Indian bands (themselves exiles from the Creek tribal federation in the states immediately north of Florida). Andrew Jackson, when he became president in the early 1830's, initiated the removal of eastern Indians in the southern states to Indian territory set aside by the U.S. west of the Mississippi and Giddings argues that the Seminoles themselves only became the object of this removal because they were harboring the renegade ex-slave population.

What is unspoken here, but probably a factor, is that since the U.S. had long since banned the importation of slaves, the Florida renegades not only represented "lost property" to slave holders in the south but a valuable source of fresh slave labor since they could no longer hope to bring more slaves into the country. So economic factors were also at work, putting a premium on slave hunting and slave catching, thus making the re-enslavement of the renegades and their descendents an especially lucrative enterprise.

In Giddings' description of events, gleaned from his own firsthand observations in Congress and from reviewing and researching related materials (which, he claims, were sometimes suppressed by southern Congressmen to avoid open discussion of the role of slavery in causing and prolonging the Seminole War), the war itself was an elaborate charade to mask the slave-catching project of southern slavers and planters. The Seminole blacks lived with and fought beside the Seminole Indians who had harbored them from the first and proved among the most recalcitrant resisters in the struggles with the U.S. Army. The army, itself, had been dispatched into Florida to fight a war the southern planters had agitated for though, Giddings observes, the planters, in Florida at least, suffered the most serious depredations from the Indian and black resisters and ended up costing the federal government far more than had ever been dreamed.

One U.S. general, Thomas S. Jessup, made substantial progress against the Seminole and their allies but lost ground when, after promising freedom to the blacks who surrendered (in the form of relocation with the Seminole to Indian Territory) he reneged under pressure by the white planters and allowed them to "reclaim" the blacks who had voluntarily surrendered or been captured on the battlefield. This decision prompted the Indians and their black allies to flee again and agitated the general to such an extent that he took somewhat extraordinary measures to win his contest with the Indians. In one particularly egregious action, Jessup captured the well-known war chief, Osceola, and his lieutenant Coacoochee with their followers when these came in under a flag of truce. Later, after Coacoochee and others escaped from imprisonment (though Osceola died in American hands), Jessup threatened to bring in bloodhounds and actually did, indicating to Giddings that the war was really about capturing slaves, not beating the Indians.

Giddings notes that the record shows the blacks were among the hardest fighters, given that they could see what awaited them once delivered into American hands. However, eventually, seeing the handwriting on the wall, their leaders decided to take their chances and surrender to the military. According to Giddings' reading of the record, the American military had formed a respect for their Indian and black adversaries and for the most part proved unwilling to collaborate in the re-enslavement (or initial enslavement in some cases) of captured or surrendering blacks. Despite political pressure on Washington politicians and the executive branch of government, Giddings reports numerous instances of military officers working to thwart the slavers' efforts to grab the black prisoners before they could safely be conducted to Indian territory. In many cases these efforts weren't successful but in many others they were, resulting in a large body of blacks finding their way into the Arkansas-Oklahoma territory with the Seminoles who were also being incrementally captured (or who had surrendered) and were transported there.

Unfortunately, as Giddings notes, the Seminole blacks' were not home free in the new territory where the U.S. government allowed the Creek Indians to reassert their authority over the Seminole in various ways, contrary to the terms of the Seminole surrender. Creeks kept slaves and followed a slaveholding system akin to the white south. Given that they believed the Seminole rightly belonged under Creek governance and that many of the Seminole blacks were actually escaped Creek slaves or descendants of such people or were part of a group of blacks captured by Creek fighters in league with Jessup which entitled the captors to claim them as property, they pushed for re-enslavement of the Seminole blacks. In the end the government in Washington was prevailed upon to favor their claim and a large number of Seminole blacks and Indians fled Indian Territory across Texas for safety in Mexico which had outlawed slavery (in 1826).

Giddings is an earnest reporter but it's not clear he always gets it right or that his research is entirely reliable. He seems to confuse the black leader Abraham with the younger black leader John Horse and paints an overly heroic picture of the Indian war chief Coacoochee. Depending as much on word-of-mouth evidence as written documents, Giddings' sentiment seems totally sincere and his eyewitness account invaluable. But as a scholarly documenter of events he leaves something to be desired.

An excellent introduction to media psychology

Giles' volume is the first textbook dedicated to the topic of media psychology. Yes, I know there are other texts out there such as Harris' textbook on cognitive psychological approaches to the media or the Bryant and Zillmann edited collection on media effects. But Giles' book provies a much broader look at this topic. The study of media psychology has long been an area of focus in Europe, but U.S. scholars (especially psychologists) have generally ignored the media. Hopefully, this volume and the fairly new journal entitled Media Psychology will increase U.S. scholars interest in the media. The two things I think some readers may dislike are Giles' almost exclusive use of examples from British TV (however, his is British). This is fine if you are familiar with British TV, but many people in the audience this book is intended for are not familiar with Coronation Street and other programs. Second, Giles can go off on rather ideosyncratic bables from time to time on topics he disagrees with (fortunately, this is rare, and a few of them are actually pretty enjoyable). All in all, a must have book for anyone seriously interested in the media.

Students Asked for More

I teach a honors-program Media Psychology course in the U.S. and had a really hard time finding a book that was appropriate for undergraduates. It's definitely not yet a topic that has major-publishers pushing out yearly editions. This book made my "final two", and though I didn't choose it because of the focus on British television, I did assign some chapters for reading. My students loved it and asked for more. They thought it was informative, readable, and accessible (except for the lack of cultural knowledge of Brit tv- the examples and case studies didn't always work for them). This is a nice "introduction to" book, with wide coverage of most of the major topics and a fairly even-handed approach to methodologies for studying media. Giles makes a comment or two here and there that seem unfairly critical of experimental methodologies for studying audiences, but in a field that tends to be so divided on methodology, I was satisfied with his approach to explaining how one studies media and media audience from textual-focused and science-focused ways.

Detailed guide with excellently written entries.

This is a very thorough guide, which I've purchased as a companion to the "Eye Witness" guide to Prague. This "Rough" guide is particularly well written, in greater detail than most guides--anything but rough. Highly intelligent and informed, it's meant for the serious traveler who likes to dig deep. The appendix covering Prague/Czech history is concise but remarkably revealing. This guide will definitely enhance my third trip to Prague.

Excellent Method...a Blast From the Past

After obtaining a 50s era flute at a silent auction and having it reconditioned, I looked for a flute method that I could use to teach myself to play. The Rubank Method popped up and I was immediately flooded with memories from my childhood in the 60s when my music teacher used this method to teach me the clarinet. I recalled it as an effective (and fun) method with some pretty interesting drills. I immediately ordered all the flute books in the series from beginner to advanced vol. 2. I had previously ordered two other flute method books and was disappointed...too much history and music theory and no logical sequential approach to learning. I can't begin to convey how excited I am to have found this method...even the cover is exactly the same...and the price can't be beat. This series is a "must" for any serious student of the flute.

Relearning the Flute

After taking about 20+ years off playing the flute I had forgotten all of the fingerings, notes, and how to read the music. This has been a great refresher and works you through each set of notes with plenty of practice snips to reinforce the skills being taught in each lesson. I would recommend this for all ages (I remember learning from these books when I was in elementary/middle school). As a parent I would assist my child in working through the books if you are doing them from home; at least until they get the hang of how to use them.

I have taught from this book for years. When learning the flute this method book steps students through a logical and simple method for learning finger technique and covers concepts that should be learned over about 2 years time for someone starting around the age of 10.

It's not just sheet music, but a 48 page course in Boogie Woogie piano

The author, Sharon A. Pease (1903-1959) attended the American College of music in Chicago and began teaching there in 1934. He composed music and wrote a monthly column for "Downbeat Magazine", discussing the biography and piano style of famous pianists that he interviewed. He also wrote a monthly column in jamboree magazine showing how to play chords. He opened his own Studio of Modern Piano in 1939. In Phoenix, he opened Keynote Music Distributors, selling phonograph records with major labels. He sometimes used the pseudonym Yardley Yates because he didn't want his students to know that he wrote "party songs" Several of his songs were recorded. He also wrote the instruction books: "Boogie-Woogie Fundamentals" (1940), "Boogie-Woogie Piano Styles No. 1" (1940) ("The history, development and art of playing the boogie woogie style") and "Boogie-Woogie Piano Styles No. 2" (1943),"88 Keys to Fame," "Styles of Famous 88'ers," "Sharon Pease Easy Block Chords", and "Sharon Pease 3 in 1 Piano Folio."

Boogie-Woogie Piano Styles No. 1 has 48 pages. It was used at Columbia University in New York to teach their students the Boogie Woogie. This book starts with a brief history about the Boogie Woogie. It then describes the styles of Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, Pete johnson and Mary Lou Williams. It continues with the basic forms of the Boogie. It gives you 25 Boogie styles in the key of C. It ends with the walking bass, and it's application to a twelve measure theme from the composition "Flinging A Whing-Ding" in the key of G. There are no fingerings.

Sharon Pease became an authority on Boogie Woogie. I have rated tons of Boogie Woogie books. This book is one of the better ones, but it's not for the absolute beginner.
