A Great Resource

I have several books by Ken Grauer. All of them, this one in particular are extremely helpful in learning to interpret 12 lead EKSs. He teaches in a funny, easy to read way. My favorite thing about his books is he gives easy to remember hints and rules that really work. No memorizing boring lists with him, because he teaches you to interpret, not just recognize rhythms. I've been in cardiovascular medicine over 15 years, yet I still don't know it all and find Ken always has something new to teach me. On I personal note, I worked as an RN at Shands at AGH where Ken is an attending MD and he is just as good a teacher in real life.

The gold standard for an ECG textbook for beginners

I teach ECG interpretation at a major medical school, and have read many textbooks looking for the best one to recommend to my students. After a dozen or so books, this one which we personally used in medical school, remains the favorite of myself and my wife (an electrophysiologist). It's well written, and at a level which assumes no prior knowledge, but without insulting its readers by being dumbed down the way most alternative texts are. It's also very thorough, and I doubt there are any ECG diagnoses or pearls which would be expected of either a student or a medical resident which are not covered. Unfortunately, this book has inexplicably been out of print for years. I really hope the publisher decides to update and reissue it, but in the meantime, if it's possible to find a used copy at a good rate, I highly recommend it.

Doesn't matter if you're starting EKG's or if you already got some knowledge on the topic. This books clarifies a lot of concepts you thought you knew well! I can't imagine why it is out of print. Very pleased with my purchase!

With both sides distracted in the U.S., this was their opportunity to seize territory in North America. In 1867, with aid from the United States, this movement came to a disastrous end both for the royals and for France while ushering in a new era for Mexico.

In a bid to oust Juárez, Mexican conservatives appealed to European leaders to select a monarch to run their country. Maximilian and Carlota’s reign, from 1864 to 1867, was marked from the start by extravagance and ambition and ended with the execution of Maximilian by firing squad, with Carlota on the brink of madness. This epoch moment in the arc of French colonial rule, which spans North American and European history at a critical juncture on both continents, shows how Napoleon III’s failure to save Maximilian disgusted Europeans and sealed his own fate.

Maximilian and Carlota offers a vivid portrait of the unusual marriage of Maximilian and Carlota and of international high society and politics at this critical nineteenth-century juncture. This largely unknown era in the history of the Americas comes to life through this colorful telling of the couple’s tragic reign.

A foreign policy adventure of France’s Napoleon III, the regime was a complete failure, ending with the 1867 execution of the “emperor,” Ferdinand Maximilian. About the Author
M. M. McAllen writes about the history of the Southwest and Mexico. Her other books include I Would Rather Sleep in Texas: A History of the Lower Rio Grande Valley and the People of the Santa Anita Land Grant, depicting the blending cultures against the backdrop of the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, and border upheavals; and A Brave Boy and a Good Soldier: John C. C. Hill and the Texas Expedition to Mier, which tells the 1842 biography of thirteen-year-old Texan John C. C. Hill, captured in battle and adopted by Antonio López de Santa Anna.

McAllen regularly provides information for television documentaries filmed by BBC, PBS, and local and public stations in Texas, and she has written numerous articles for magazines and journals. She lives in San Antonio, TX.

An Historic Soap Opera

Having travelled to Mexico City and other venues central to this niche in history, they became alive due to the superb detail, narrative, and depth of knowledge the author puts forth in this hard to set down read. This book brings Maximilian, Carlotta, and the whole coterie to crisp life so much so....that it can seem that you are there as well experiencing almost every event. For those even mildly interested in history in any form, I highly recommend this fascinating book.

A great read, excellent research, and well crafted.

This is a book about an obscure era in Mexican history not known to almost any Mexican and just as important in the scheme of things as other eras. There's a sad story here of well meaning European royalty, French aristocracy, intrigue, betrayal, and a love affair between Emperor and Empress. It's good stuff. And if you have any sense of history whatever, it will thrill you. Be warned, however, this is a tradgedy.

The text is intended for introductory microprocessor courses at the undergraduate level in technology and engineering. It is a comprehensive treatment of the microprocessor, covering both hardware and software based on the 8085 microprocessor family. The text assumes a course in digital logic as a prerequisite; however, it does not assume any background in programming. At the outset, though; we need to answer the following three critical questions.

1. In the early years of the twenty-first century, is an 8-bit microprocessor an appropriate device through which to teach microprocessor concepts when 32- and 64-bit microprocessors are readily available? If we consider the worldwide sales volume of microprocessor chips, the answer is a resounding yes: 8-bit microprocessors (including single-chip microcontrollers) account for more than 90 percent of the total. The 8-bit microprocessor has already established its market in the areas of industrial control, such as machine control, process control, instrumentation, and consumer appliances; these systems that include a microprocessor are known as embedded systems or microprocessor-based products. The recent 32- and 64-bit microprocessors are used primarily in microcomputers and workstations; they are so powerful that their applications are better suited to such tasks as high-speed data processing, CAD/CAM, multitasking, and multiuser systems. The 32- or 64-bit microprocessors are less likely to replace 8-bit microprocessors in industrial control applications.

From the teaching point of view, we are interested in teaching the basic concepts underlying a programmable device, such as buses, machine cycles, various processes of data flow (parallel, serial, interrupts, and DMA), internal register architecture, programming, and interfacing. A general-purpose 8-bit microprocessor is an ideal device to teach these concepts, especially in a rapidly changing technological environment. When students master the basic concepts, they will be able to apply those concepts in such an environment, whether it is based on a microcontroller, an 8-bit processor with a different set of instructions, or a 64-bit processor.

2. Why shouldn't we focus on the Intel high-end 32- or 64-bit processors when PCs (personal computers) are commonly available in college laboratories? This is similar to asking why shouldn't we use LSI devices to teach basic logic concepts of AND, NAND, and OR. To teach basic concepts, we need a simple processor with an adequate instruction set. The Intel high-end processors are too difficult to comprehend at the introductory level because of their complex architecture and large instruction set. They are suitable for high-level languages and handling large databases and graphics. These processors are used primarily in PCs and network servers.

3. Why teach the 8085 microprocessor? This question has several answers. One is that any 8-bit microprocessor that is commonly available will meet the teaching criteria, and another is that the 8085 is one of the most widely used microprocessors in college laboratories. It has simple architecture and an adequate instruction set that enable instructors to teach necessary programming concepts. It is inconsequential which microprocessor is selected as the focus; the concepts are easily transferable from one device to another. Having learned basic concepts with the 8085 microprocessor, students can adapt to the microcontroller environment (such as the Intel 8051 or Motorola 68HC 11) or to the PC environment. Furthermore, peripheral devices (such as the 8255A, 8254, and 8259) are commonly used in the PC environment. One can argue for a microcontroller as a basis for an introductory course. However, the experience, of many institutions suggest that a microcontroller is an appropriate device for a higher-level course; at an introductory level, the pedagogy becomes quite cumbersome. Furthermore, general-purpose 8-bit processors are now being used in small systems such as graphic calculators, coffee machines, home appliances, and serving web pages over a TCP/IP network.

PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH AND TEXT ORGANIZATION

The microprocessor is a general-purpose programmable logic device. A thorough understanding of the microprocessor demands concepts and skills from two different disciplines: hardware concepts from electronics and programming skills from computer science. Hardware is the physical structure of the microprocessor, and the programming makes it come alive; one without the other is meaningless. Therefore, this text presents an integrated approach to hardware and software in the context of the 8085 microprocessor. Part I focuses on the microprocessor architecture, the 8085 instruction set, and interfacing; Part II introduces programming; and Part III integrates hardware and software concepts from the earlier sections in interfacing and designing microprocessor-based products. Each topic is covered in depth from basic concepts to industrial applications and is illustrated by numerous examples with complete schematics. The material is supported with assignments of practical applications.

Part I has five chapters dealing with the hardware aspects of the microcomputer as a system, presented with the spiral approach that is similar to the view from an airplane that is getting ready to land. As the plane circles around, what one observes is a view without any details. As the plane starts descending, one begins to see more details. This approach is preferable because students need to use a microcomputer as a system in their laboratory work in the early stages of a course, without having an understanding of all aspects of the system. Chapter 1 presents an overview of microprocessor-based systems with an illustration of a microprocessor-controlled temperature system (MCTS). It presents the 8-bit microprocessor as a programmable device and an embedded controller, rather than a computing device or CPU used in computers. Chapter 2 introduces the instruction set of the 8085 processor. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 examine microprocessor architecture, memory, and I/O, with each chapter having increasing depth-from registers to instruction timing and interfacing.

Part II has six chapters dealing with 8085 instructions, programming techniques, program development, and software development systems. The contents are presented in a step-by-step format. A few instructions that can perform a simple task are selected. Each instruction is described fully with illustrations of its operations and its effects on the selected flags. Then these instructions are used in writing programs, accompanied by programming techniques and troubleshooting hints. Each illustrative program begins with a problem statement, provides the analysis of the problem, illustrates the program, and explains the programming steps. The chapters conclude with reviews of all the instructions discussed. The contents of Part II are presented in such a way that, in a course with heavy emphasis on hardware, students can teach themselves assembly language programming if necessary.

Part III synthesizes the hardware concepts of Part I and the software techniques of Part II. It deals with the interfacing of I/Os, with numerous industrial and practical examples. Each illustration analyzes the hardware, includes software, and describes how hardware and software work together to accomplish given objectives. Chapters 12 through 16 include various types of data transfer between the microprocessor and its peripherals such as interrupts, interfacing of data converters, I/O with handshake signals using programmable devices, and serial I/O. Chapter 14 discusses special-purpose programmable devices used primarily with the 8085 systems (such as the 8155), while Chapter 15 discusses general-purpose programmable devices (such as the 8255A, 8254, 8259, and 8237). Chapter 17 deals primarily with the project design of a single-board microcomputer that brings together all the concepts discussed in the text. Chapter 18 discusses trends in microprocessor technology ranging from recent microcontrollers to the latest general-purpose 32- and 64-bit microprocessors.

NEW AND IMPROVED FEATURES IN THE FIFTH EDITION

The fifth edition preserves the focus as described and includes the following changes and additions, suggested by reviewers and by faculty who have used the book in their classrooms:

Chapter 1 is revised to include the most recent technological changes and introduces a block diagram of the microprocessor-controlled temperature system (MCTS).

Chapter 2 introduces a programming model of the 8085 processor and its instruction set; this was Chapter 5 in previous editions.

Chapters 3 and 4 include additional explanation and expansion of blocks in the MCTS.

Part II (Chapters 6 through 11) has few changes in the content, except an 8085 simulator (on the CD packaged with the text) can be used to demonstrate the use of instructions.

Chapter 11 is revised to include technological changes in PC development systems.

Chapter 15 includes an additional interfacing application in the context of the MCTS.

Chapter 18 is updated to include the latest technological changes in 32- and 64-bit microprocessors.

Appendix D includes data sheets of additional devices such as the LM135 temperature sensor.

Appendix H is added to include detailed information on the 8085 simulator.

Stay away from 5th Edition

BAD BOOK! Not necessarily the material (although as previous reviews have correctly noted, it's no 5 star), but I would like to address the 5th Edition, hard back BOOK published by Prentice-Hall. My book has publishing errors & is poorly constructed. For example, Appendix G, which is solutions to select problems, is apparently the answers for an earlier edition - they make no sense. The book's binding is falling apart. I've had to glue mine up in order to hold it together. Now this is a new, $100+, hard back, text book! I contacted the local Prentice-Hall Rep. for my school 3 weeks ago & still no help. Save your $ on this 5th edition, if you have any other options, until Prentice-Hall corrects their quality control publishing problems (& until they "step up to the plate" & correct problems when they've goofed!).

Excellent for learning Microprocessor basics

I had read this book page by page during the semestre of Computer Architecture course in 1986, but it is even more useful today. Because the book explains every concept on microprocessor with the help of 8085 which is very simple to understand. In addition ,if you have Microprocessor experimental kit (8085 of course) then it is really easy to get the whole basic principles about microprocessors, structure, programming, peripherals and so on. Every EE student who is interested in microprocessors, should read this book and do the lab exercises with an experimental kit. Thanks Gaonkar for this excellent work.

Good, but not structured properly; lacks detail

The book is good but only if you're gonna use it in conjunction with class notes or if you want to read it twice. The content (just the 8085 processor) is good. Everything is well explained. The structuring of the book isn't too great. You'll run into the same thing at three different places and all explained at different details. So it gets irritating at times. Also, the level of detail about the peripheral chips (even for the standard chips - only one has been explained in length, the others just find a mention) isn't too great. Maybe Gaonkar assumed that one would have access to the Intel manuals. I don't know how it works with the other books on this topic, but this book isn't exactly 'the' reference book for somebody working with the 8085, because you'd have to keep using other books or Intel manuals .

I Love the Church!

I've read through this book a number of times, but it's now so full of highlights that it's practically unreadable - hence the Kindle edition! In these days of 'confusion' about what the Christian church is, this book by a lifelong Anglican 'pastor and shepherd' - and a highly respected theologian - is well worth a read; especially if you're involved in leading a new church, or one which needs a breath of fresh air. It's written out of a genuine love for the church of Jesus, and is simple and practical too.

Just Okay

I really liked the first book in the series so I thought I would give this one a shot. I wish I hadn't read it. I really did not like Molly's attitude the whole book. I mean come on yes he is a cop and there are some dirty cops out there but there are also bad lawyers, bad teachers, bad doctors and so much more. Why do you have to be prejudice against him because of his job when he puts his life on the line every day to make the world a safer place. Then she gets pissed because he breaks up a underage party that is going on next door to her house. Um HELLO its called breaking the law and so yes they should get in trouble and he should do something about it every off duty a law is a law. I was just not a fan of her. The book as okay but definitely could do without her attitude.

Love a man who does what is right

This book is about John. When his girlfriend gets pregnant he does what is right and marries her. Then when she decides to bale he does what is right and tries to raise his young son on his own. I loved how Judith Arnold made John so real. Who hasn't given up the battle for bath and settled on cookies and milk instead. John wants to do what is best for his son but he just doesn't really know how.

Enter Molly and her pre-school and daddy school. Molly is a wonderful character that cares instently about these two lost men. She is drawn to John even though she has issues in her past that make this relationship difficult.

This book is a real enjoyable ride. Love all the daddy school books and would highly recommend this one

Brings back good old memories

[[VIDEOID:29069151]]This is a hardcover book with a dust jacket. It contains almost 200 pages of full colour illustrations.

Right at the front is a multi-fold page that unfolds into a small Dragon Ball poster with a thank you note from Akira Toriyama.

Following on are illustrations from the weekly JUMP title covers as well as comic covers. Each is fully coloured and reproduced big. It really brings back memories of reading the comic, as well as anticipating weekly at the comic book store.

It's really great again to marvel at the uniform ink strokes and character designs of Akira Toriyama.

Every piece of work is annotated at the back of the book. Included is also the very unique sequential spine art for the comic, which at that time I thought was really cool. There are also mugshots of Akira Toriyama over the years, including photos and icons.

An interview with Akira Toriyama is also included to give this book some depth.

There's really nothing not to like about this book if you're a Dragon Ball fan.
