Entry Level User Experience Book

UX Design: Foundations for Designing Online User Experiences is a good introductory book for anyone new to User Experience design and also new to projects or working with clients. More than one-half of the book is about the process of user design. For example, one chapter walks through reserving a conference room, having the proper equipment, planning an agenda---the type of tasks that a management trainee or junior project manager should already know.

UX Design: Foundations would be a helpful book for someone in a new or junior role that is unfamiliar with user experience design and wants to learn to help them as a team member in a small project. It will also be a helpful book for experienced project managers who have a user experience work stream as part of their project, and just want a general sense of the field.

As UX Design: Foundations focuses primarily on commerce sites, it is not as helpful for intranet, applications, or even complex sites. There are some elements that are important across all types of sites, such as information architecture, home page hints, etc., but again, all of these are at a high level.

UX Design: Foundations for Designing Online User Experiences is a fast, easy read, and it's true to it's title in that it provides foundational information for readers to get a very high level perspective of user experience design and the process of working with clients and site users.

Should be titled Project Management of UX Designs

Should be titled "Project Management of UX Designs for Very Large Websites", instead of "UX Design". 2/3 of the book consists of excellent details on web UX project management; 1/3 is webpages' UX recommendations, mostly on retail websites. For example, book writes more about workshop procedures to gather UX specifications than about webpages' UX specifications.

Authors are premiere UX consultants in Great Britain, hired by sizable companies, frequently retailers. They write from such perspective, dealing with websites with budgets covering several specialists including visual designer, developer, marketer, product managers, campaign managers, etc. Excellent tips on how to involve committees and consensus-building during web UX design. Not for smaller websites.

The book has weaknesses. 1. User design, I believe, should be tied into search engine and web marketing, and this approach doesn't. 2. The book is interested in profitability and returns on investments, but I feel it should have stronger emphasis. 3. Tie into social media in design is absent.

Incorrect title and profitability weaknesses--4 star.

Who would particularly benefit from this book?

1. Buyers of UX services would learn what UX people do.
2. A trainee for UX would learn a lot!
3. A web designer without a UX department who suddenly lands a large project.

Scratches the surface but no deep dives

I love Smashing Magazine's website and use it for inspiration or to research something pretty frequently. I was excited to see what their book on UX would be like. I'm a little disappointed that it's more of a shallow overview and nothing really substantial. I think it's geared towards folks that are just starting out, to talk about the process. It's a bit dry and short of illustrations or examples. I don't have other UX books to compare it to but I have a feeling that there are better resources available. I'm mildly irritated by the super short chapters and lots of red header text that I find distracting. I'm sure there's some good information in here but I don't feel like sifting through the book to find it.

This is a fabulous book. I use it with my clients and have of course done the work myself. I am so glad it has been reprinted. Thom Rutledge's book/workbook can be used alone or in conjunction with a therapy practice. Serious work with lots of good writing to "lighten it up."

A very helpful resource!

First off I want to say that anything Thom writes is worth it's weight in gold. I work in the area of eating disorders and recommend all of Thoms books to my clients. He knows what he is talking about. The name Thom Rutledge is synonymous with recovery from any addiction whether it be codependency, eating disorders, substance use etc. This handbook is so very helpful and allows the reader to work at their own pace. I hear from women all the time about how much they gained from not only reading this book but by working through it applying the tools to their lives. Thank you Thom!

I LOVED Tullet's previous book Press Here, so I had to get Let's Play as well. Let's Play is also a fun book, but I don't like it as much as Press Here. My kids (ages 6 & 2) do enjoy reading (and playing!) this book.

Perfect for target audience

This book is excellent and does exactly what it sets out to do, namely give medical students a great resource for teaching themselves medical Physiology. It's not a detail oriented reference book, there are plenty of those on the market if that is what you are looking for. This is the book you would use to supplement your class notes/powerpoints while taking Phys in medical school. After reading this cover to cover, using the authors BRS Phys book for Step 1 prep would be the natural progression as her BRS is just the cliff notes of this text. It's a wonderfully written book with a logical flow and appropriate use of pictures to get the point across. Very clear explanations with alot of the superfluous fluff left on the cutting room floor.

This is an excellent book! I am studying for my surgical primary for the australian generic surgical science exams and physiology comprises of 1/3 of the exams. I didn't have the time to read Ganong and Guyton (recommended texts) for my exams. I did try to, but found these two books too long-winded and more often than not, I got lost while reading. I found Ganong really reader-unfriendly and difficult to understand and Guyton too much details. Then I found this book. What a relief!! The author has a very special ability in making complex concepts simple, and the concepts are organized in a very systematic way that I could retain. Unlike Ganong, where the concepts and sub sections are poorly organized such that at the end of reading, I still have no idea I just read. One thing to note about Constanzo's book, it doesn't have the very in depth details. I would say for my level, it's probably 80-85% sufficient. Some part I still have to refer to Ganong or guyton. But I am more than happy to do so to build on the wonderful layout of concepts which Constanzo has already done so marvelously.

If you looking for a book that you could finish entirely and understand the core concepts, this is the book for you,

So far I have only read a couple chapters in this book but Linda is the truth! She takes the complicated concepts that my professors at school have trouble explaining/conveying to the class and puts it in lay man's terms. Medical school physiology does not have to be hard and Linda proves this with her simple explainations and simple illustrations. I advise any medical student who is having trouble grasping concepts in class to purchase this ASAP!

About the Author
Kelly Doudna has always had an interest in science. She was a member of her junior high school school science club, but turned her focus to English and writing in college. She attempted the study of meteorology in graduate school, but was kicked out of the program after she flunked calculus twice. That led her to pursue a commercial art degree, and today she combines all of these interests as a graphic designer and in-house writer at Mighty Media, Inc. Kelly has authored over 250 educational books for children on topics ranging from the alphabet to baby animals to the weather. In her free time, Kelly enthusiastically pursues bicycling, photography, cooking, and the craft beer scene, and documents it all in her blog.

Terrific Hands-On Learning

I’ve seen students study simple machines in the past, from the youngest to the oldest at my school (K-8), and to support them, I’ve scrambled to find many resources that would help them in a discovery process. There needed to be some explanation, a gathering of materials, and then the fun work of experimenting, trying all sorts of ways to try to learn how each kind of machine works. We did do it, but how I wish I had had this wonderful book by Kelly Doudna to help the students learn!
Kelly introduces the six simple machines with good basic examples in words and pictures first. For example, a young girl pours her breakfast cereal from a container; it’s an inclined plane. And that, along with the other machines’ examples, shows what they REALLY DO. Each one, when used, gives a mechanical advantage, an important first vocabulary term. The introduction also introduces Archimedes, and like a few other background pages throughout the exercises, it shows a picture, the time period in which he lived, some of what he studied, and a famous quote. Early in the book there is also a visual list of all the common household items needed in order to do the experiments. It will be helpful to those preparing to experiment.
Each machine is thoroughly introduced, and includes what is termed a “Spotlight” (the first picture) which is a real-life example of one of the machines. For example, an airplane’s propeller is shown and defined as a screw, which is an inclined plane wrapped around a core. And the ferris wheel (picture above) is introduced in the section about the wheel and axle. Each “Spotlight” offers history along with pictured explanations of the example. My favorite explains the pinball machine! The book is filled with clearly explained information and lots of pictures, along with many application activities. It has a few pictures at the back in order to see if you can identify the simple machines in use, and a brief historical piece about Rube Goldberg.
I imagine that not only should a school’s library have one of these books, each classroom will benefit from this terrific resource. It's a book both entertaining and educational!

Fun and educational

I remember when my children were in school they learned about simple machines in school during science lessons. It would have been absolutely fantastic to have had The Kids’ Book of Simple Machines available for them to thoroughly explore the basics of machine concepts.

In this super little book, the six basic machines are introduced in understandable terms and then spotlights are on the history of their discovery and use as well. The six are: lever, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, wheel and axle, and screw. Included are activities using simple, everyday items to make these or use them to create engineering marvels of their very own.

I like that the author brings a bit of history lesson into the mix as well - introducing Archimedes, Galileo, and on to the Wright brothers and Rube Goldberg. I like that there is a separate chapter for each “machine” after the initial introductory chapter. Again, the author has placed a spotlight in each chapter that captures the reader’s attention with history or more detail. Wonderful! Then at the back, finding or identifying machines in everyday things. And then the wonderful concept of true engineering – putting together several “machines” to create one.

And like all good educational books, there is a glossary of words and terms that might need a bit of defining. Then for hunting and finding a bit of special information, there is an index at the back and a table of contents in the front. Truly a book that will prove entertaining (for boys and girls alike), educational (for kids of all ages – yep, Mom & Dad will enjoy discovering with the kids), and enjoyable.

Fun and educational!

I was excited about this book that I ordered for my 9-year-old grandson, and I was not disappointed. It has lots of examples and simple experiments to help kids learn to recognize the simple machines we use all the time and how to use the concepts to make work easier and safer. I wish I'd had a book like this when I was a kid.

A simple and useful book

A surprising simple and useful reference book for decision making.

Although Ken Watanabe was a consultant dealing with business decision makers, he showed his incisive self by illustrating decision tools using 3 intriguing stories.

5 decision making tools were introduced: logic tree, Yes/No tree, problem solving design plan, hypothesis pyramid, and pros and cons evaluation table.

Some salient points:
1. Problem solving isn't a talent. It's a habit. By developing the right skills and adopting the right attitude, anyone can become a problems solving kid.

2. Problem solving is a process that can be broken down into four steps: (a) understand the current situation; (b) identify the root cause of the problem; (c) develop an effective action plan; and (d) execute until the problem is solved. making modifications as necessary.

3. You have to keep asking the "why" and "how" to develop a custom made action plane.

4. On problem solving design plan, if you start collecting and analysing data without first clarifying the question you are trying to answer, you're probably doing yourself more harm than good, and realise later that most of the research was a waste of time. To avoid this problem, you should develop a problem-solving design plan before you start chasing after information. In the design plan, you clarify the issues you are trying to solve, state your current hypotheses and rationale, and list the analyses, actions, and information required to prove or disprove those hypotheses, drastically increase your problem-solving productivity. Additionally, putting your plan down on paper will not only clarify your thoughts. If you are working in a group, this plan will also help your team to focus on what needs to be done and provide the jumping-off point for your group brainstorming. You will be able to focus on only what you really need to know to make a decision.

5. The 5 columns for a problem-solving design plan are issue, hypothesis, rationale, analysis/activities and information source.

6. When you set a goal get into the habit of asking yourself, "What specifically do I want to achieve? When do I want to achieve it? What specific conditions do I have?"

7. There are 2 forms of hypothesis, an argument structure and grouping structure. Unlike the grouping structure, with an argument structure, if one of the statements is untrue, the main conclusion is automatically false.

8. Impact = plan effectiveness x quality of execution

9. Once you have a concrete plan of action to achieve your goal, don't forget to create a concrete schedule. Write down everything you are going to do, and when you plan to do it.

10. We tend to be swayed by our first impressions. If we first think something is attractive, we tend to try to collect evidence that supports that idea. On the other hand, if we think something is unattractive, we tend to highlight only its negative points. It is critical to avoid this tendency in order to make a sound decision.

11. These are more than just tools for organising your thoughts. They help point out information you might be missing and bring up questions you may need to ask yourself along the way about what you really think is important.

12. We often make important decisions without taking enough time to think through the options and to track down accurate information.

13. The most important thing for you is to be surrounded by great players that you get to both play with and compete against on a daily basis. Also get as much playing time as possible by playing real games under pressure.

14. Luck is what happens wen preparation meets opportunity.

15. Spend less time worrying about things and more time thinking about actions you can take to get closer to your goals, then actually take action.

16. Problem solving is easy when you now how to set a clear goal, figure out how to reach it, and follow through while reviewing your progress and making changes to your plan as necessary.

An easy read about thinking, decision making, and problem solving tools.

A nice, short read. Describes the use of a few thinking tools that can be helpful in our daily lives and at work, packaged in a form of cute children stories. I particularly enjoyed the illustrations.

The tools described includes:
1. Logic tree and yes/no tree: a visual tool for identifying all potential causes of a problem
2. Problem-solving design plan: a method that includes clarifying the issues you are trying to solve, stating your hypotheses, and listing the actions required to prove or disprove those hypothesis
3. Prioritization matrix: plotting your solutions in terms of impact vs. ease of implementation
4. Hypothesis pyramid: clarifying our argument before diving into data collection
5. Pros and cons and Criteria and Evaluation: for evaluating multiple options

Some of these tools I had learn in school or am using at work. Reading about them is a refreshing exercise.

If I have one complaint about the book, it is its price. The Kindle version sold on U.S. Amazon is pretty expensive considering the length of the book. I finished it in about an hour.

An excellent critical thinking textbook with an emphasis on the practical

Watanabe wrote this book as an introduction to practical critical thinking designed especially for the Japanese educational system, which faces some of the same challenges that the Chinese system faces when it comes to critical thought processes. The book is targeted at middle school students, but can be profitably read by anyone. The primary value of the book is that it deals with practical critical thinking (that is, problem solving) as opposed to information-analysis critical thinking, which is used primarily to decide whether or not we ought to agree with propositions or actions that are being urged on us and is taken up with logical structures and standards of evidence. The latter type of critical thinking is, of course, quite necessary, but it is almost the only thing that one generally sees in critical thinking textbooks.

The book has four sections: a description of the dispositions of effective problem solvers (invaluable and a nice addition to my current dispositions lecture), finding root causes, setting and pursuing goals, and making decisions. Each of them explains how things are done using an extended illustration of a particular school kid drawn as a cute little cartoon animal. It would be a phenomenal basis for an upper elementary or middle school CT class, along with a similar volume on info-analysis critical thinking.

Best money spent for multiplication review bc it lets you ...

Best money spent for multiplication review bc it lets you use over and over which is exactly what kids need for learning multiplication (constant repetitious review). Have been using it for over a year now and works great. Also have the old alphabet set and used that for both my two older kids over a span of 3 years and are still in good enough shape that my third will also use it covering not s total of 8 years of use!!

Easy to use format for teaching an important concept in basic math, multiplication. Just wipe away errors and keep going or clean the slate for repetition. Good set of teaching practices, through and interesting.
