really is not that good. I would suggest getting another book as well ...

I'm new to the unix/linux system. Learning because of all the commotion as of late in the cyber world. This book did not seem very intuitive to me, examples are created and aren't explained as made up instead you end up creating meaningless files and have to apply the characteristics to normal behavior.
The book also does not explain some things that should be explained in the begining of the book. Usually they will have something that says "see chapter 5 for more details on -----" but not always the case, especially the email talk. They talk about emails and perusing email in early chapters but it isnt until 220 pages into the book that you actually find anything differently. I needed this book for a class in college, really is not that good. I would suggest getting another book as well as this one, possibly about shell commands. I'll update this later if I find one. The humor is very dry and pretentious to say the least, reddit users would have a ball tearing this guy to shreds.

Honestly I learned a lot with this book but I also put 20+ hours in doing so with many revisitations. This book wouldnt be bad as a reference but does not do justice as a introductory "quickstart"

Also reading the other person's review - if this book is nearly identical to the previous version you'd be better off getting the previous version. what they may have added was the indexes at the end (which are actually helpful).

Nicely written BUT not helpful as a learning tool

Unless this is assigned for a class (which is why I bought it) I would bypass this for almost anything else. The one benefit of this book is the clearly written text and the attractive layout. BUT many of the graphics showing code and output have been shrunk so much to fit them into neat columns that they are literally illegible without a magnifying glass. So you miss whatever the point of those examples might be. Moreover, coverage of many areas that are important for beginners is absent or skimpy.

I was lucky to be able to find supplementary material from the library to get me through the class - this was pretty inadequate.

Don't see any difference between this 5th edition and the previous edition (which I have). Page for page the book seems to be identical. Which is probably the reason why the authors haven't explained in the intro why they've bothered with a new edition.

An incredibly readable introduction to Neurobiology

Out of all of the biology textbooks I have read thus far this one was by far the most readable. It describes concepts as they would be described by one of your friends, and still provides just enough detail to satisfy the specificity and rigor of a Neurobiology course.

This text is probably not ideal for more advanced courses delving deep into specifics of the nervous system, nor as a reference text for the brain in general. However, it's truly excellent for those just getting their first or second taste of the field of Neurobiology.

A beautifully written book that explains how (and why

A beautifully written book that explains how (and why!) the nervous system works, and it does so in easy to grasp terms. It explains neurobiology in terms of systems that independent units are organized in, and shows connections and links between each process. It really helps to see a bigger picture of how the brain works without compromising on details of each process. The book is very easy to read and understand, which is super important for a text book. Each chapter includes sometimes rather philosophical Brain Exercises that encourage readers to pause and think about why things work that way and what would happen if they would not.
I greatly recommend this book for any neurobiology major!

Turnipseed has expanded a 1997 GQ article on his experiences as a reluctant Marine during the first war with Iraq into a compelling memoir that has more than a little in common with Anthony Swofford's Jarhead, which was also an account of the camaraderie, "soul rending boredom" and horror of life on the battlefield by a bookish soldier more comfortable hefting a pen than a gun. In 1990, Turnipseed is a college dropout in Minnesota, spending his days sipping coffee and reading Nietzsche, when his unit is called up for active duty. The first thing he does is decide to start smoking. Armed with a pack of Camels (later a pipe), a journal and a duffel full of philosophy texts, Turnipseed soon finds himself hauling munitions through the Saudi desert. His bunkmates, with their Game Boys and beer parties, at first regard him with suspicion. And no wonder: when his nose isn't buried in a Kierkegaard tome, he's prone to pedantic lectures and generally comes across as sneering and pretentious. For a while, Turnipseed relishes his role as egghead among the meatheads. Offered a warm Old Milwaukee one night by one of his brothers-in-arms, Turnipseed waves him off and turns back to his book. "Get real," the soldier retorts. "We're all in this together now, philosopher. Better make the best of what ya got." And soon, of course, his pompous veneer melts away in the desert sun and he realizes he has more in common with his Marine brothers than he would ever have thought. This is a coming-of-age story with all the right ingredients: self-deprecation, wit, insight, irony and a lucid, enthusiastic writing style. The Marine who emerges at war's end is older and wiser-and liked and accepted by his unit-and a pretty good writer to boot.

He writes with wit and adds insight through philosophy.

M*A*S*H*, with the 4077th, was one of TV's most beloved military sitcoms. Turnipseed, like the writers of M*A*S*H*, captures, in this memoir, the monotony of military life, the irony of military regulations, and the tragedy of war.
For those who have suffered through the empty hours of guard duty; for those who were assigned to meaningless, tedious tasks; for those know the meaning of the acronyms: `FUBAR' and `SNAFU', this book will bring back memories.
Turnipseed was lost, homeless and directionless before being called to active service. In the 1991 Iraq War, Turnipseed was stationed with the Marine Corp Sixth Motor Transport Battalion.
"Not till we are lost, not till we have lost the world, do we begin to find ourselves". These words by Thoreau `s were Joel Turnipseed's scripture and his compass during the war.
During this war, he found meaning and direction. He writes with wit and adds insight through philosophy. Recommended.

one of the best accounts of the gulf war yet

Baghdad Express is a memoir of the first Gulf War written by Minnesota native Joel Turnipseed. Since this came out around the same time as Anthony Swofford's Jarhead, there will likely be some comparisons. There shouldn't be. Baghdad Express is much better. On a very basic level, Turnipseed is a better writer than Swofford is. Baghdad Express is well constructed and follows from beginning to end the tour of duty in Desert Storm.
Joel Turnipseed is a different kind of a soldier. More of an intellectual than the prototypical warrior, he would much rather be in a coffeehouse discussing philosophy than in a military caravan. However, Joel Turnipseed is a Marine. He wanted out of the Corps, but never left and now he was called up and activated. When we learn that Turnipseed brings volumes and volumes of philosophy with him to war, we know that we are in for a different kind of war story.
Turnipseed was a driver for the Baghdad Express. The Baghdad Express was the largest supply line in recorded war. He would drive up to 600 miles a day in round trips bringind supplies and material to the front lines where the fighting and flying is going on. So while he wasn't a front line fighting soldier, he had a vital role in the first Gulf War. He relates his experiences in the war. Partially an outcast because of his philosophy, he was also included in a group called the Dog Pound. The Dog Pound was mostly African-American soldiers (Turnipseed is white) who loved to talk. Community was build through trading insults and fast moving conversation. Turnipseed's ability to adapt to this and his inclusion into the group (even spouting philosophy and have it listened to) was probably vital to his experience. However, as the war ends and the Minnesota group came back, Turnipseed finds himself slipping out of the Dog Pound that was his home for the duration of the war.
This was a very different look at a war because of who Joel Turnipseed is. He writes as a disclaimer that this is a memoir of memory and not of journalism so any mistakes is from what he remembers and perhaps not as everything actually happened....and this is a very honest admission. This is his story as he remembers it. He tells it very well and it is the best account I have read of the Gulf War (Thus far).

A view of war from the rear

Turnipseed's memoir of his experiences in the first Gulf War is in many ways the antithesis of Anthony Swofford's best-selling account, "Jarhead". Whereas Swofford was a scout/sniper in a regular Marine infantry unit, Turnipseed was a reservist truck driver called to active duty while trying to complete a degree in philosophy. We see life in a combat zone from the perspective of what the Grunt calls REMFs. (If you don't know what that acronym stands for, I'll let you play with it in your mind.)If the infantryman's existence is mostly boredom, living in filth and waitng around for something to happen, the support enlisted person's is tedium, living in less than sanitary conditions and trying to dodge the mind-numbing games the military plays with its members' heads. This feeling Turnipseed captures quite well. An example is the scene where the troops are assembled and told to take a combination of pills. Some of the more thinking Marines join with the author in a discussion of whether or not they should take this phamacuetical cocktail and what the side- and after effects might be.
As a former elisted soldier in the days of the military draft I can sympathize with Turnipseed's description of the abject loneliness one feels when joining a new unit. When separated from his buddies in the resreve unit he went to the Gulf with, the author ends up spending most of the war with a predominately Black platoon of truck drivers. They eventually accept him, are amused by his deep, thoughtful observations and nickname him the "Perfessah".
The description of his troubled youth including beatings at the hands of an alcoholic father and abandonment by a mother with mental problems and his motivation for joining the Marines are, I suspect, not atypical of the all-recruited military. One tiresome part of the narrative is the author's constant reference to firing up a Camel -a habit he began just before leaving for active duty. On second thought, this may be a literary device to illustrate the boredom of war in the rear. This is a good, quick read that will upset some readers who view everyone in uniform as a "lean, mean fightin' machine".

What is a book...

Great art, while it not not contain the complete works of any one game it offers a nice variety of all 3 games. I wish it contained any of the in-game bestiary or character profiles that Jorge Benedito drew, that in itself could fill its own book. Not even Kojima herself drew every monster and character in game. Definitely for anyone whos a fan of the series, old or new.

Beautiful art book of all three games

Strong and sturdy with gorgeous high quality pages depicting concept art from Lords of Shadow, Mirror of Fate, and Lords of Shadow 2. Also shows scenes from Mirror of Fate in early storyboards, which is always very interesting to see.

Wonderful collectible piece for any diehard Castlevania fan and an amazing asset for any prospective concept artists out there.

Great artbook

I purchased this for a friend but had to page through it first to verify it's quality.

The content covers the first Lord of Shadow game very extensively. The backstory summations of important characters alongside many illustrations give the book a very cohesive and useful tone for fans. It also covers the new sequel to Lords of Shadow but its more of a late addition compared to the breadth of content about the first game.

If you're a fan that enjoyed the art of the series it is easy to recommend purchasing it.

A must for all those directly involved in education.

Rarely does a book change your perspective on a subject and then provide you with on-going thoughts that then change you, especially books written about education. This one does. It is a must for all those involved in education that wish to further their view of creating learning environments for meaningful lessons. Teachers, preservice teachers, and teacher educators will benefit from this wonderful read. Ayers lifts the words off the page, tranforming them into carefully composed lyrics that are obviously written by a teacher who cares for the well-being of children in today's world.
If you like kids, you'll like what you read in this book. If you want to improve your teaching, you'll receive some great ideas for doing so; expect no recipes or prescriptions, though, because this journey begins with you. Don't miss this opportunity.

Inspiring Read

This book was required reading for one of my education courses, and truth be told, it was very accessible, inspiring, and motivating. The writing is conversational and the tone is uplifting, though with an edge of criticism. It is clear that the author is a seasoned teacher, and for someone like me who is pre-service, the kind of wisdom that comes from his experience is invaluable. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is seriously considering becoming a teacher, as it will stimulate many questions about the way things are in education today.

A very challenging book

I really appreciated this book. Ayers is very passionate about a teacher's responsibility to help their students become complete human beings. Reading this book, and Grant Wiggins Understanding by Design, in a graduate class renewed my passion for teaching, which is really a passion for learning. Education should be about the big questions of life, not just the details and basic skills that are tested and required by the state and federal government.

Ayers is committed to developing whole and complete human beings, not automatons.

My only issue is with his emphasis on social justice as the focus of education. While I agree that a concern for social justice will emerge in people who think for themselves, it seems as if his recommendations force this concern on kids a little too heavyhandedly. If we are to be independent, complete people, then naturally what concerns us will not always be the same. Nevertheless, his emphasis is better than many who want us to just teach kids to read words and add and subtract, but don't really care if they can think for themselves.

Almost no one is actually lazy, says Dr. Mel Levine, author of the #1 national bestseller A Mind at a Time. Low productivity—whether in school or on the job—is almost always caused by a genuine problem, a neuro-developmental dysfunction. Despite this, untold numbers of people have been stigmatized by unfair accusations of laziness, many of them adults who still carry emotional scars from their school days.

In The Myth of Laziness Dr. Levine shows how we can spot the neurodevelopmental dysfunctions that may cause “output failure,” as he calls it, whether in school or in the workplace. Dr. Levine identifies seven forms of dysfunction that obstruct output. Drawing on his years of clinical experience he describes eight people—children, adolescents, and adults—he has worked with who exhibited one or another of these problems. He shows how identifying the problem can make all the difference, leading to a course of corrective action rather than to accusations of laziness and moral failure. For example, a child who is unable to plan or to think ahead, who cannot consider different methods of accomplishing something or has difficulty making choices may wait until it is too late to complete an assignment or may act impulsively, creating a pattern of bad judgments and careless errors. Dr. Levine explains how such a child can be helped to learn how to plan ahead and weigh various alternatives. This sort of problem, if untreated, can persist into adulthood, where it can wreak far more havoc than in the classroom.

The Myth of Laziness explains the significance of writing as a key barometer of productivity during the school years. Because writing brings together so many neurodevelopmental functions—such as memory, motor control, organization, and verbalization of ideas—it can provide crucial clues to pinpoint the sources of output failure.

A professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina Medical School, Mel Levine received acclaim for his previous book, A Mind at a Time, which argued that children’s different learning capabilities demand diverse teaching strategies. In The Myth of Laziness, Levine isolates another group of kids--so-called "lazy" children who aren’t working up to their potential in school--and explores the causes of their low performance. Levine scoffs at the perception that any child is lazy, stating that "everybody yearns to be productive." These children, according to Levine, are simply experiencing "output failure" due to different neuro-developmental weaknesses.

Levine produces case studies of seven children and adults who have been labeled lazy and identifies internal sources that are undermining their production. Many of their output issues revolve around difficulties with writing, as is the case with Russell, who is hindered by his low motor skills, or Clint, whose long-term memory lapses prevent him from expressing himself well. Other weaknesses, such as poor oral language ability, mental energy dysfunction, poor idea generation, and organizational problems, plague the individuals in these case studies. Levine talks briefly about external factors that contribute to low output, such as socioeconomic background, family life, and negative role models. In the profile for Scott Murray, Levine even has the humility to admit that he was unable to reach this young man. External influences--namely, Scott’s privileged upbringing--were too pervasive in causing his output failure.

The last few chapters are devoted to suggestions for what parents and teachers can do to foster productive output in their children and students and how to detect a problem that is internal rather than environmental. Tips on how to cultivate writing skills, set up an organized home office, and assist with homework are aimed at parents while teachers are encouraged to consider individuality among their students’ learning styles. Finally, the appendices offer two worksheets to help students plan stories and reports. Two additional worksheets help pinpoint whether output problems are the cause of poor schoolwork. Pediatrician Levine, a developmental-behavioral expert, offers theories on why it's so hard for some teenagers-even bright ones-to succeed in school. "Often these individuals absorb and process information well; they learn but they don't produce," he says, adding, "people say glibly that they are not `living up to their potential.' " Levine prefers the term "output failure" over "laziness." In a series of case studies, he discusses the biological, neurological and psychological factors that may be responsible for "output failure." He focuses on kids challenged by oral and written communication; he believes parents and educators must pay attention to different learning styles rather than simply label a child as lazy. Even fidgeting, according to Levine, may be a plus: "Isn't it odd that kids get criticized for being fidgety when they should be commended for implementing a strategy that significantly elevates their attention?" Despite the thought-provoking theories and discussions of problems such as impairment in the generation of ideas and memory difficulties, only the final chapter, "Cultivating and Restoring Output," offers a broad range of strategies that can be used to remedy such troubles. Still, the advice-e.g., create a home office for kids, document time spent and level of output, adjust expectations-is on target and should help struggling parents.

Auditory Processing Disorder Must Read!

Anyone that is a parent of a child that has the daily battle of learning with an auditory processing disorder needs to read this book and educate themselves on the battle that these children fight daily to produce "average" results in the classroom. So very happy that my son's audiologist enlightened me to this author and the view into how my sons' brain works. This has been so helpful in knowing how to explain to teachers, administrators and even learning consultants on exactly what they are dealing with when working to help educate my son.

Productive Reading

Even some of the best-informed educators lose objectivity in the classroom. Similarly, parents wonder what is really happening there, having to rely on the teacher's analysis and the child's rendition. With all of this potential confusion comes a mistake easily made and painful to undergo: labeling a bright but differently wired student "lazy". This book clears the air, reminds the adults to steer away from blame and coercion and adhere instead to productive strategies that will help a child learn in her own way.

The book is particularly useful to adults who work with children whose most pressing obstacle is low output of school work. Here are strategies for improving productivity through self-tracking...the student can track his own progress in producing more completed assignments, for example, which relocates accountability and satisfaction where it belongs: with the student. Many strategies to attain improved output are presented and are generally practical, which is a breath of fresh air to all concerned.

This is especially helpful if read following Mel Levine's "A Mind at a Time". For secondary and college age students, "Learning Outside the Lines", by Joathan Mooney and David Cole should take its place immediately on the reading list.

A possibly life-changing book

As a contrarian, I was attracted by the title of this book. It was *fantastic*! The author is a neuro-developmental pediatrician who specializes in diagnosing the neurological breakdowns that cause some otherwise smart kids to have "output failure" making them appear "lazy". In a series of composite studies, he describes the kind of neurological breakdowns that can happen, their consequences and some practical ways to handle them.
The range of composite studies include the following:
- lack of coordination and stunting one child's writing ability,
- low mental energy in another (and her father), and
- the lack of creativity by an otherwise high-producing student.

This should be required reading for every schoolteacher in America! Highly recommended!
