Editions of Blake's poetry which as an artist and printer he frequently engraved and published himself most often fail to reproduce his integral illustrations, or do so in poor enough quality as to negate the effort. This Complete edition from the Blake Trust, published last year in a Thames and Hudson hardback edition that is now out of print, should replace the b&w-only Dover edition (but not David V. Erdman's commentary therein, or his reading text The Complete Poetry and Prose of William Blake) for any reader. The 366 crisp color and 30 b&w reproductions here, culled from the scholarly Princeton University Press six-volume annotated set, are little short of a revelation, giving us Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience, America, Milton, Jerusalem and the rest of the Blake canon in a form acceptably close, as Binder's introduction makes clear, to the way Blake wanted us to see them. Many of these works are currently hanging in a special Blake exhibition the largest ever at the Met in New York, for which the Abrams book serves as an informative and revealing catalogue. Hamlyn, a senior curator at London's Tate (where the exhibition originated), and the University of York's Phillips present prints, drawings, paintings, selections from Blake's own illuminated books and other relevant materials, such as snapshots from Blake's marvelous editions of Edward Young's Night Thoughts and Thomas Gray's Poems. Introductory essays from novelist and biographer Peter Ackroyd (Blake; T.S. Eliot) and Marilyn Butler, rector of Oxford's Exeter College, synopsize Blake's life and times, while extensive "label copy" situates each work as presented. While the visual overview is useful and some of the detail shots of larger works are compelling, poetry readers who have to choose will take the Complete.

Fascination Has Its Price

Generally, I enjoy the art works printed by Dover Publishers. For Dore, Grosz, Hogarth, Piranesi there is none out there better.

But volume of Blake's work is worth a price that is triples the rate for anything from Dover.

It is a beautiful publication with perfect color matches to the original. It offers the chance for the reader to deal with the text from the original or to choose much more readable type at the volume's end.

If you want to have a visionary's art and verse handy and home, this is the book to buy

Amazing Collection at a Great Price

The Complete Illuminated Books is a wonderful collection of facsimiles of Blake's original etchings. Because Blake's printings were so limited (sometimes only printed in a single volume and at most printed in 50 volumes)this is as close as anyone will get to experiencing the original prints of William Blake. I highly recommend this book for anyone who appreciates literature, art and their innovative intertwining by a master of both. A beautiful volume and an incredible value!

the original illuminated books

This beautiful paperback volume consists of high quality reproductions of Blake's original illustrated books. It is an incredible bargain. The pictures are powerful and Blake intended the pictures and the texts to illumine each other. I've never disciplined myself to sit down and read the text from the engraved script; its not easy or natural since the print on many plates is small and faint; but it would be worth the effort. However, there is a type face version of all the poems in the back, to refer to when needed to make out a word. This is an essential book for anyone seeking to understand Blake's profound prophetic vision more deeply.

Reading this book was one insane trip

The book is a transcript of a 3 day seminar. On the first day, you will learn the basics of NLP. On the second day, you will start to learn how to apply NLP. On the third day, your eyes will be opened to the full range of posibilties that NLP presents.

The authors are very, very clever and, it was only until I finished the book, that I realized they were practicing what they were teaching the whole time: the book is basically a 3 day long NLP pattern. Once you finished the book, not only will you know NLP ideas, you will know how it is like to have it worked on you.

Extremely mind blowing stuff. I've read another NLP book before published by Harper&Collins but this one beats it 100x. This will be one of the books that I will never re-sell and will always keep with me from move to move.

These two guys are brilliant, creative

A transcript of a workshop done by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. These two guys are brilliant, creative, clever beyond reckoning, and can guide you by the hand out of overthinking. As a reformed overthinker, I can tell you that there is no such thing as overthinking, only ineffective thinking repeated endlessly. If you want to know more, just buy the book, wait a month, and see how you're doing.

They never discuss overthinking here, it's just that this book is such a stellar example of clear-headedness that it's liable to rub off on you.

How can I make things really groovy?

Frogs into Princes (1979) is the first-ever comprehensive book on Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). It's a seminar transcript [or "trance"-script, to be punny (since its co-founder Richard Bandler is also a hypnotist)] that was edited and published by John Stevens [a.k.a. Steve Andreas, who studied under Abe Maslow (hierarchy-of-needs) and Fritz Perls (founder of gestalt therapy)].

It's so well organized and presented, together with a detailed introduction, that you feel like you're a part of the live-audience. This leads to the paradoxical problem of reading the book too casually, similarly to passively watching a performance, as opposed to treating it as the actual manual of techniques and profound concepts that it really is (which are based on extensive research that began in 1973). The paradox is that that's exactly how the authors (Bandler and John Grinder) want you to read it - because you learn more, as they tell you, subconsciously - without attempting to consciously analyze or memorize the (otherwise overwhelming) new terminology and ideas. Ideally, you should re-read the whole book immediately after you're done with your initial reading, so you could finally completely understand the proper attitude and approach that the authors are trying to instill within you (yes, you must read it twice).

NLP is not a household name as such - whereas, its most famous teacher, for example, is: Tony Robbins, who was trained by co-founder Grinder [pronounced as in "grin", not "grind"]; it also is the scientific foundation of popular TV shows like "Lie to Me", which exemplify how to read subtle "eye accessing-cues" (and other body-language) found throughout Frogs Into Princes. As they write (on page 47): "Eye movements and body movements will give you information about process. The proper domain, in our opinion, of professional communicators is process. If you indulge in content, you are going to unavoidably impose part of your belief and value system on the people you communicate with. The kinds of problems that people have, usually have nothing to do with content; they have to do with structure, the form of how they organize their experience."

Bandler and Grinder say (on page 9): "Our job is to figure out what it is that effective therapists do intuitively or unconsciously, and to make up some rules that can be taught to someone else." They have done a phenomenal job of that over the years. In addition to educating you, they will also humor you - as in the following interspersed witticisms:

(page 9): "[Academics] are not interested in the real world, and having lived in it I can sometimes understand why."

(page 32): "You can't even spell 'phonetics' phonetically!"

(page 114): "...remembering to breathe; oxygen is essential for this whole process."

(page 166): "It's important for some people to have the illusion that their conscious mind controls their behavior. It's a particularly virulent form of insanity among college professors, psychiatrists, and lawyers."

Towards the end (page 190) of this pioneering 194-page book, they ask rhetorically "How can I make things really groovy?" - which is the above title of my review [that you've probably noticed at the subconscious level, right?] - after which they proceed to briefly discuss the limitless potential within NLP for "generative" change.

For those of you who might only want the latest, condensed, quick-and-easy, "self-help" version of NLP, I highly recommend Bandler's "Get the Life You Want" (2008). That one, you don't have to go over twice - and you could use it as a "pocket-guide", too. Frogs Into Princes - and especially, The Structure of Magic (vol. 1: 1975 & vol. 2: 1976) - is intended more for researchers or serious students of NLP.

This ambitious but technically unsophisticated first entry in a series features street-wise New Yorker Neal Carey, a 23-year-old graduate student of 18th-century literature. Neal is directed by Friends of the Family, a discreet, private investigation agency for which he works, to find Allie Chase, the teenage, drug-addicted daughter of a U.S. senator and presidential hopeful. Allie is somewhere in England and must be returned to the States before the Democratic Convention nine weeks away. Neal finds Allie but is forced to use his cunning to bring her home; at the same time he suspects someone from the agency is trying to kill him. Winslow guides us on a tour of punk 1976 London and introduces some colorful characters. But this first novel loses much of its punch because Winslow overloads beginning chapters with his hero's personal history rather than pacing the plot with relevant details. Neal is a distant hero whose escapades seem artificially linked.

excellent debut

This is a brisk, immensely enjoyable updating of the private eye and noir genres. When we first meet Neal Carey he's a graduate student at Columbia, working on a degree in 18th Century English Literature. But then he receives a call from his "Dad," Joe Graham, who turns out to be the one-armed dwarf who sort of adopted Neal when he was eleven years old and running the streets. A series of flashbacks shows Graham teaching Neal how to survive and grooming him for an eventual position trouble shooting for a shadowy organization called Friends of the Family, who look after the interests of the wealthy clients of the Kitteridge family bank in Providence, RI. Over the years, Neal learned everything from how to tail people to how to search a room without anyone ever knowing, and in the course of these unusual studies, Joe realized that Neal was a gifted student. Eventually the Friends send him to school, but now they need him for a special assignment.
It's 1976 and with Jimmy Carter likely to win the Democratic presidential nomination, he's expected to look for a northern running mate. Senator John Chase of Rhode Island has a decent shot at the job, but there's one significant skeleton in his closet : his troublesome teenage daughter has run away to London. Now it's up to Neal to go find her and bring her back in time for the Convention.
Neal is a streetwise and sassy hero, which makes for plenty of snappy banter. And the London he arrives in is in the midst of the birth of punk rock, which provides an unusually anarchic backdrop to the action. Add in a priceless first edition of Tobias Smollett's The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle and a double-crosser within the Friends and you've got a mystery that cleverly mixes elements of classic noir with various innovations of the author's own. A Must Must Must Read!

This is a fabulous book, introducing the reader to fascinating characters (Neal Carey, Joe Graham, etc). As the first in a series of Neal Carey mysteries, this is the perfect book to drag you in and hook you, leaving you wanting more. The story is fascinating, and the driving plot makes this a page-turner. And how can you not fall in love with these charatcters?This is one of the best detective mysteries I've read, and I reccommend it to ALL my friends. READ IT!

How can a first book be this good?

Don Winslow's debut novel is scary good. The writing is completely self-assured. The comedic moments and sarcasm are well constructed. And he has created an interesting and hugely appealing main character for a series, and surrounded him with several interesting back plots and secondary characters.

This is a book that will teach you a lot. You'll learn things you didn't know about 18th century English literature, how to tail someone and not get caught, the best way to score drugs in London, and the finer points of picking a load for a shotgun. It will also show you that Don Winslow is a master at scattering gems like that through a book with a fast moving plot, richly drawn characters, and a very good sense of place.

I've read several other books by Winslow. I especially liked The Winter of Frankie Machine, California Fire and Life, and The Power of the Dog. I backtracked my way into the Neal Carey series and was amazed to find that his debut novel is as good as any of his best works.

I don't know how someone comes out of the starting gate with such a well-written first effort, but Winslow has done it. Bravo. I recommend this highly.

The perfect heart wrenching love story.

This book was absolutely amazing. Its a quick read and sums up what it feels like to first fall in love. The love story is so beautiful and after I finished the book I re-read it a second time. You can't help but fall in love with the characters. I recommend this book to anyone who loves romantic comedy books.

FIRST LOVE by James Patterson and Emily Raymond is an adventurous love story with two lovable teenagers. The story reads more like a Nicholas Sparks romantic novel than from the pen of hard-nosed mystery writer, James Patterson.
Alexandra Moore—Axi—and Oscar James Robinson meet in the ward of a cancer hospital where they both are recuperating from daily doses of chemo. Axi has recently lost her little sister, Carol Ann, from the dreaded disease. Axi’s mother, unable to cope, flees the family never to be heard from again. The father drowns his sorrows with nightly doses of alcohol.
Seeking to escape from it all, Axi cooks up a detailed cross-America road trip. Knowing she can’t pull it off by herself, she persuades the love of her life, Robinson, the handsomest boy in the high school to partner with in her adventure. From the start, the odyssey does not go as planned.
Axi and Robinson—although only sixteen—seem more like young adults in coping with the many roadblocks they encounter along their wondrous journey.
First Love is cleverly written, it’s funny even in the midst of pain and heartbreak. The book is not a page-turner but a story you want to return to first thing every morning.
It would be a sin not to turn this heartfelt novel into a movie.
I highly recommend First Love and rate it a 5. It’s a winner.

"you might want to keep some tissues close by... and some ice cream"

Since my internet has been out for a few days I took the privilege in reading this book at my own, slow, enjoyable pace. Because that is what this book deserves, to be read slowly and absorbed like a sponge. It wasn't the easiest thing in the world to do, especially when all I wanted to do was read it all in one instant so I could see what would happen next without having to wait any. First Love is a contemporary young adult romance that ties a great deal into the authors own past. Knowing that his past had a great deal to do with this particular story being written is one of the main reasons I wanted to read this book, and agreed to do so for the publisher, free, in exchange for my honest review of it. Not only that but I have always wanted to try James Patterson's work but have never been able to get my hands on one of his books.

One thing that everyone should remember when picking up this book is the fact that it ties into the authors past. If you don't skip ahead of the introduction note from Patterson in the beginning of this book you will get a big clue as to what will happen some time during this story of his. Which is why I went from being totally pissed about one of the characters surprising us with the news of having cancer to total sadness and acceptance. You can't read his introduction letter about how his first love had had cancer and then expect a story that is inspired by that love story to not have a cancer twist in it. If you do then you are the one setting yourself up for a big disappointment, not the author. As one of the main characters in First Love says, you can't have a good story with just the good parts. It all has to be in there, the good and the bad, or else it's not a real story. And while I am one of those who refuse to read anything remotely sad and that has characters getting extremely sick and possibly dying I will be adding this book onto my bookshelf to re-read later. Simply because it is too amazing not to. Even with all the bad mixed in.

Romantic, funny, heartbreaking. First Love is a love story for the ages. One that I myself can sadly relate to in some ways. I will have to say that I believe Mr. Patterson has given Mr. Sparks a run for his money and seriously hope that this will be turned into a movie someday. Be warned though, you might want to keep some tissues close by... and some ice cream.

A Lodging Pioneer of Hospitality

My background is what academia refers to as "clinical" in nature and several years ago, I addressed several classes at the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality & Resort Management at the University of Memphis in Tennessee. Having taught as an adjunct professor for 20 years at three different colleges, I have always been comfortable as both an academic and corporate educator, facilitating more than 3,400 classes and programs.

The classes were interesting and as I was leaving, I spent a few minutes in the small museum type setting that includes some of Wilson's memorabilia. I was never employed at Holiday Inns, but living in Tennessee (then global headquarters for the brand) for more than 15 years certainly brought me into substantial contact with many people who had been. While Wilson was not a traditional hotelier by schooling or experience, he definitely influenced many business practices in franchising, brand support, standards and values.

Displayed in the lobby of the Wilson School of Hospitality & Resort Management at the University of Memphis are what he called his Steps for Success.

#10 included the title of his book: Remember that success requires "Half Luck and Half Brains". He uses his 20 Steps as episodes and illustrations. I found the content of this book to be quite interesting and not the frequent "bragging" that some biographies lean towards. Written by Wilson at age 83, he shares his "better way" of offering affordable lodging in understandable and practical lessons. The book also includes more than 100 photographs of family, business partners and unique scenes in the evolution of Holiday Inns in the days before the industry became involved in heavy mergers and the danger of the industry becoming viewed as a commodity.

Nice book!

Don't know why it is no longer in print. That is why I bought it used which I do not always do. The book I got looked like it was new and I love the cover. The story itself is true and informative though a little jagged (jumps around a bit).
