A poet, corporate trainer, and author of The Heart Aroused: Poetry and the Preservation of the Soul in Corporate America, Whyte challenges readers to remember their childhood interests and enthusiasms. He claims that this is necessary in order to escape the deadening influences of adult "musts" and "shoulds" and to recapture the passion that one needs to do good work. Whyte discusses his own career changes, from naturalist to nonprofit executive to writer/presenter/coacher. Powerful prose

This book was recommended by my sister who is a brilliant artist that knows her brother inside out and backwards. I was in tears in the first chapter, and I have never seen a wordsmith put sentences together as does David Whyte; they are packed tight with elegance and meaning. If you are spending much of your time wishing you were somewhere else, doing something else, pick up a copy of "Crossing the Unknown Sea -- Work as a Pilgrimage of Identity."

Its fair because it focus on the hardware side and not the software

This book is about putting together a FORTH development system for the 8051 on an IBM PC type system. I think its popularity is from the absense of any other books like it. The author spends a lot of time on the development of the 8051 hardware platform but doesn't give equal attention to the software side. I was disappointed by its lacked of any discussion about FORTH for the 8051, and the development of the PC development environment and the FORTH run time environment for the 8051. The author included long hexidecimal listings (left for the reader to enter) but it would have been nice if they had included the commented source code they were produced from.

Highly sought after embedded software/hardware guide

This book has a bit of a cult following. It's accessible to any well rounded technical person but is no non-sense, no fluff. It covers more area in more depth than anything else I've seen. It shows you how to interface an 8051 -- wiring it up on a bus to RAM and I/O, and then how to bootstrap it in the self hosting language Forth, including the joys of programming the 8051.

The 8051 is still widely available from places such as JR electronics and is still a darling of embedded applications, process control computers and so forth, and this book gives you the background knowledge and tools to program the thing.

8051 assembly is easy, Forth is fun and easy to learn, and the amount of system integration involved in building an 8051 system is minimal.

If you're thinking it would be fun to build your own small computer from parts, you need to do system integration for a custom product, or you want to learn what's involved in designing embedded electronic systems for large scale mass manufacture, this book is a great pick.

I wanted to like it, great cover!

I really wanted to like this book and I really tried to be positive about it. I think this book has a place and I just want to be clear on where that place is for potential buyers. First of all, if you are looking for a book that gives you any insight on what you need to do to find elk,this is not the book. What this book would be perfect for is, if you are planning on a guided trip only, and you know nothing about elk hunting, this is a great book packed with campfire type stories from the authors experiences in the past when elk hunting. There are way more personal stories that are really not educational than anything in the book. Very good fireside story book, but give you no practical knowledge about finding or hunting DIY elk. If you need to find elk, check out the jump start elk hunting book. Can't do any better for the money.

One giant brain dump on elk hunting...not that well structured or easy to read

This book is a hard read. Yes, it is crammed with a ton of information. The author is clearly knowledgeable about elk and hunting elk. But the book reads like a novel. Small typeface, very few illustrations, and the few pictures included look like they were taken in the 1970's - grainy and hard to see what the author is talking about. It reads like a novel; page after page and paragraph after paragraph of text. If you have the time and the patience to spend a few weeks reading this and think you can absorb everything, then by all means get this book. But if you need a reference, with easy to find and easy to digest information, keep looking.

I found the perfect book for me

This book is thick and heavy! It is full of a ton of in-depth information and is printed on high quality paper stock. I only rated it 3 stars since it was not exactly what I was hoping for. Too many "stories" in it for me. I wanted on target, here is what you do to prepare for elk hunting with out stories. I found the perfect book for me: Jumpstart Elk Hunting: The Everyday Hunters Guide, it is awesome!

Unperturbed, Wilde produced four society comedies in the early 1890s, which made him one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London. Wilde reached the height of his fame and success with The Importance of Being Earnest (1895).

Different

The average work about socialism talks about such dry topics as economics and politics. This essay doesn't do any of that. It goes into art, and even pseudo-psychology (one could say). It covers a broad variety of topics in a short amount of pages. I agree with almost everything said in this book. It's definitely worth reading and will really make you think.

You will have to read it more than once.

First: Oscar Wilde is one of my favorite writers of fiction and my very favorite poet. This work at first reading had too many contradictions, so I read it again in its entirety. I got the real gist of it when I reread portions of it several more times. He has expertly dotted qualifiers in his praises of Socialism. I missed the qualifiers which gave rise to the seeming contradictions. Wilde praises Socialism for pages and pages, but quietly qualifies that his praise is for socialism as a very highly desirable but very highly personal system (close to the soul) to go no further than the boundaries of your own family. Take that socialist family structure beyond that boundary and you will have nothing but conflict, discontent, dissatisfaction, etc. Socialism is TOTALLY unworkable beyond self and/or family. Wilde saw it. Now I see what he saw. Read it carefully.

Trenchant Defense of Individual Rights

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Oscar Wilde's polemic is the way in which it summarizes many of the themes explored in his better-known fictional work. In THE SOUL OF MAN UNDER SOCIALISM he calls for the creation of a socialist state in which class-differences simply do not exist: everyone has the chance to pursue their own dreams in a completely free environment. In such a world social pressures are no longer relevant; because everyone is equal, they no longer envy one another, and possessions assume minimal significance. Government - of the kind understood in Victorian Britain, where the monied classes assume automatic power over the less advantaged - can be abandoned in favor of a more egalitarian system in which everyone has the chance to assume equal authority.

Such proposals (as other reviewers have remarked) might seem idealistic - even unworkable - but they are part of Wilde's continuing criticism of a society where the aristocrats automatically believed in their right to govern, even if they had no idea how to practice it. Privilege led to arrogance, and this helped to sustain the inequalities that were endemic to Victorian Britain. Wilde also understood the evils of capitalism: although Britain liked to represent itself as "the workshop of the world," its status was founded on inequality, where the masses worked for minimal wages in filthy conditions, while the factory-owners got richer and richer as a result. A truly socialist state would serve to eliminate such class-differences; instead, everyone would learn how to work together for the common good.

But Wilde's true sphere of interest lies in the cultivation of the imagination, or the soul, as he terms it. In contemporary Britain most people have neither the chance nor the inclination to develop themselves spiritually, to consider the beauties of the universe, as they have to spend most of their time trying to make ends meet. In a truly socialist society, where everyone was happy, more time and opportunity would be provided for contemplation, to understand the true nature of beauty and thereby develop the imaginative faculties. This could only lead to the enrichment of society as a whole. Wilde understands how romantic poets such as Shelley, Byron and Coleridge managed to achieve this state of mind in the past; but they had the financial and social opportunities to pursue their interests. Wilde wants that privilege to be extended to everyone.

THE SOUL OF MAN UNDER SOCIALISM might seem somewhat idealistic, but in terms of Victorian history it can be read as a trenchant critique of capitalism and associated iniquities such as colonialism and exploitation. Wilde believed that everyone should be given true freedom of expression, something he himself was denied later on in the 1890s (THE SOUL OF MAN APPEARED in 1891), when he was arrested for so-called "debauched" practices. The way in which he was treated by the British authorities only served to emphasize the importance of his demands, as expressed in this work.

Light hearted, but completely serious...wonderful!

I preordered this book months ago. I forgot it was coming out this month so was very pleasantly surprised to find it on my doorstep Friday evening. I started reading it that night and while I'm only half way through the book, it is amazing. So many wonderful quotes! So much thought provoking information.

Pam has such a down to earth, honest, funny, light-hearted style. But don't let that fool you there is pure gold in these pages. I did one of the exercises this morning before getting out of bed and immediately felt a shift in how I was viewing the coming day.

If you are wanting to change how you view your life and the world in general, don't wait, get this book.

Thank and Grow Bitter?

I have successfully used the law of attraction to transform every aspect of my life in the last three years (I am currently in the process of buying a lake house in a major metropolitan area). I rarely write negative reviews, but this is the most relentlessly negative law of attraction book I have ever read. And I feel like I need to give people who are currently dealing with challenging financial circumstances a heads up.

When people feel good about themselves and the world, they naturally behave with generosity and kindness. No one needs to be guilt-tripped or frightened into being a good person by being told 75 people will die of malnutrition in the time it takes to finish their cereal (this is an actual example from the book).

My husband and I donate a large proportion of our income, but I still think it is fine for people to have mega-mansions and sports cars (2 things Grout criticizes), because I believe in the infinite wealth of the universe. Fewer people are dying of malnutrition now than they were in the 60's, even though the population has ballooned since then and the rich have gotten richer, because a rising tide (or vibration) lifts all boats.

There is a lot of split energy and contradiction in this book. She takes frequent potshots at other self-help authors and the pointlessness of self help in general, even though that is how she makes a living, and almost all the 'party games' are just thinly disguised ploys to market the book on instagram.

I can honestly say almost all the self help I have read has really helped me. Pretty much anything a person resonates with will work. There are infinite possible routes to the same destination.

She also criticizes meditation at several points, even though many of the people featured in the book attribute their success to a meditation practice, and it is the cornerstone of various completely valid spiritual paths.

She berates the 1% and romanticizes pre-industrial societies, while also jetting around the world and zip-lining at luxury resorts or eating barbecued lobster in the rain forest. She brags about having resources 'out the wazoo,' while putting other rich people down multiple times.

I loved Pam's first book. She just needs to clear some beliefs before she writes the next one.

If someone is struggling financially and is looking for something that will transform their life into the most incandescently happy and prosperous it has ever been through gratitude, I highly recommend The Magic (The Secret). This book is completely positive (There is a reason Rhonda Byrne is the most successful law of attraction teacher. She obviously practices what she preaches!). It is also easy to find used for the price of a cup of coffee.

Disappointing

I really tried to keep myself from writing a bad review for this one, but one can only handle so much self-restraint, right?
First of all, let me say I'm a huge Pam Grout fan. I devoured E-Squared, E-Cubed, and Jumpstart Your Metabolism. I anticipated this latest book for 3 months, my hopes were high.
The book started off great, too. Very inspired thoughts on gratitude, I highlighted a good chunk of that first half. Until I reached the exercises (or Party Games as Pam calls them). I had expected a practical series of 30 experiments as the title suggests, but these party games were put together very sloppily, they were clearly added just to please the editor (as Pam admits). I didn't even get what I was supposed to do in many of them. They read like a stream-of-consciousness rather than, you know, a book.

What's worse, Pam keeps guilt-tripping rich people (or those aspiring for great riches) throughout the exercises, suggesting the more you have, the less other people will. That is so backwards for a LOA writer! All the buzz she created during Part 1, she kills in Part 2. It's as if 2 different authors wrote the 2 parts.

I had to force myself to finish this one, and felt worse than I did when I had started, and I think this says a lot about a book that's supposedly on gratitude. So consider yourself warned. Sorry Pam, but I think you need to study some Abraham-Hicks and clear those contradicting beliefs before you set out to write another of these.

The study offers significant new evidence demonstrating that a model of literary dependence is the only viable explanation for the work. It further examines the compositional logic used in transforming the source text to produce the Covenant Code, thus providing a commentary to the biblical composition from the new theoretical perspective. This analysis shows that the Covenant Code is primarily a creative academic work rather than a repository of laws practiced by Israelites or Judeans over the course of their history. The Covenant Code, too, is an ideological work, which transformed a paradigmatic and prestigious legal text of Israel's and Judah's imperial overlords into a statement symbolically countering foreign hegemony. The study goes further to study the relationship of the Covenant Code to the narrative of the book of Exodus and explores how this may relate to the development of the Pentateuch as a whole.

Excellent resource, except...

Wright has written an excellent piece of work where he makes a convincing case that the Covenant Code makes extensive use of Hammurabi in its collection of laws. The book is an excellent resource, with some solid exegesis of cruxes in CC based on LH. Wright also makes a helpful case for why CC is better explained as the work of one writer using multiple sources than of multiple layers of secondary additions. However, Wright presses his case too far by claiming that this borrowing (as he calls it) takes place during the neo-Assyrian period. Why could this borrowing not have taken place in the pre-monarchic period? While everywhere else Wright gives volumes of evidence for what he writes, he dismisses the possibility of an early date with this brief response: "It is hard to imagine why and how a premonarchic or even incipient monarchic society would produce a collection resembling LH and other cuneiform collections. It is much easier to think that it would be produced by a society with an established tradition of monarchy". Yet Wright admits there is no evidence that LH circulated in Israel in the Neo-Assyrian period. And if the discovery of a piece of Mesopotamian law code in Summer 2010 at Hazor is followed up by more such discoveries, Wright may have to do some quick backtracking on his proposed date. In fact, Wright's volume full of data can be explained better by an early date than by a Neo-Assyrian date.

fairness in reviewing

As the two previous comments indicate, the person with the one-star review could not have read the volume but was evaluating it with a set of external criteria that s/he wish to have reinforced, as the one litmus test for approval. Wright's book is creative, incredibly well-informed historically, ambitious, and serious. It is an important way of thinking about the values that animate the Bible and about its originality, and it has theological significance.

This book want to "prove" something that it's not true.

First how you can know that the Laws of Hammurabi were written before The Five books of Moses?

second even if you want to believe that the Laws of Hammurabi were first, they only have in common a few laws, that it's possible that God want to include in The Five books of Moses, and The Five books of Moses has a lot more to teach...
