From School Library Journal
YA-- A brief, easy-to-read autobiography of a black man who is one of today's leading neurosurgeons. While pursuing his career, Carson encountered prejudice, negative peer pressure, and politics in getting a job. His sense of humor, faith in God, patience, and his belief in the work ethic come through without preaching. In the last chapter, Carson gives recommendations to students on ways to live and to achieve. --Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA

From the Publisher

In 1987, Dr. Benjamin Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head. The extremely complex and delicate operation, five months in the planning and twenty-two hours in the execution, involved a surgical plan that Carson helped initiate.

Carson pioneered again in a rare procedure known as hemispherectomy, giving children without hope a second chance at life through a daring operation in which he literally removed one half of their brain.

But such breakthroughs aren't unusual for Ben Carson. He's been beating the odds since he was a child.

Raised in inner-city Detroit by a mother with a third grade education, Ben lacked motivation. He had terrible grades. And a pathological temper threatened to put him in jail. But Sonya Carson convinced her son that he could make something of his life, even though everything around him said otherwise.

Trust in God, a relentless belief in his own capabilities, and sheer determination catapulted Ben from failing grades to the top of his class--and beyond to a Yale scholarship . . . the University of Michigan Medical School . . . and finally, at age 33, the directorship of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Today, Dr. Ben Carson holds twenty honorary doctorates and is the possessor of a long string of honors and awards, including the Horatio Alger Award, induction into the "Great Blacks in Wax" Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, and an invitation as Keynote Speaker at the 1997 President's National Prayer Breakfast.

Gifted Hands is the riveting story of one man's secret for success, tested against daunting odds and driven by an incredible mindset that dares to take risks. This inspiring autobiography takes you into the operating room to witness surgeries that made headlines around the world--and into the private mind of a compassionate, God-fearing physician who lives to help others. Through it all shines a humility, quick wit, and down-to-earth style that make this book one you won't easily forget. Dr. Benjamin Carson is director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He lives with his wife, Candy, and three sons in West Friendship, Maryland.

A role model who uses a winning strategy. Should be required reading for all black youths.
By Leib Gershon Mitchell
This is a magnificent book. It can be read as an inspirational story, or it can be read as an installment on the Habits of Highly Effective people.

What are the 5 things that stand out the most in my mind? (I'll limit the observations to 5, because there is just so much good to take away from this book.)

1, The subject of the biography is a profoundly religious man. It appears to me that many people who are successful have some type of religious foundation (Sikh/ Hindu/ Christian) and use it in the appropriate place for their life.

2. Carson seems to see people as people. (For instance, both the words "White" and "Black" were capitalized when they referred to a person's ethnicity.)

3. There is no hint of bitterness or of Victomology. Carson was trained to do something and he *earned* his respect by demonstrating skills and bringing something to the table. (He did not spend any time trying to guilt whites into seeing him as an equal.) At the same time, he does not shy away from seeing himself as a black person. (His wife is black and so are his children.)

4. There are many strategies that were used on him in his upbringing that would be useful to other parents. i. No more than 3 TV shows per week. (As in, three hours or TV or less.) Two books per week.

5. Carson has said something that has run through my mind 1,000 times: Not all children can be a sports star or singer (the odds are less than 1 in 10,000).

Of the prose: It's very easy to read and interesting (thanks to Cecil Murphey) and the pages just breeze by.

Verdict: Worth the time. Worth the money. Highly recommended.

One Amazing Family
By Jeannette
I was surprised to read the accounts of Dr. Ben Carson. His mother had a strong stamina in raising her two boys with such a positive attitude. She is my all time mentor. With hard work, and complete trust in God we all can accomplish what God has planned for us in our lives. She is a true example of an incredible faith. Dr. Carson is a one on a kind, as he was so honest is sharing his story, He is the unspoken hero that took many years of hard work to develop his talents, yet our God gave him and his wife a marriage union that held them though all circumstances., One thing I will take with me from this book is the power that God gives us with total faith in Him. My thanks Dr. Carson for a truly wonderful book that was well worth reading.

A must read
By dusyy
A fabulous read. Dr. Ben Carson is gifted in so many ways over and above his knowledge of medicine. His shared insights are thought provoking and character building.
A mother totally involved in encouraging her children and the discipline to see it though gave her children the ability to believe in themselves. A young person finding his way through a childhood of poverty learning what truly are important values . It would be good for every student and parents of students to read this book. Parents would learn you do not need to be your child's friend to be loved and respected by your children and children would learn how to value them self and to find what values are truly important and not what society feeds our children .

The Drunk Diet: How I Lost 40 Pounds...Wasted: A Memoir, by Lc Carl

With his trademark rock 'n' roll hair and snakeskin spandex pants, plus a hot rod and a Harley, Lüc Carl fit the part as a bar manager based in New York City's gritty Lower East Side. And life was good for this Omaha, Nebraska, transplant—a talented drummer who originally moved to the big city to pursue his rock 'n' roll dreams—until, suddenly, it wasn't. Fast forward through seven years of working long hours, binging on late-night Chinese food, and drinking excessively; life had found Lüc forty pounds overweight and completely out of shape. But when he turned to the "experts" for advice—reading countless fitness and weight-loss books in the process—he discovered that they all made the same claim: "You can't drink alcohol if you want to lose weight." Lüc decided to take matters into his own hands to transform his body and his life his way.Full of charismatic wit and raucous stories about his life, The Drunk Diet will inspire and challenge you to become fitter, healthier, and happier. Lüc's fitness philosophy isn't about following a list of rigid rules or traditional "do this, not that" charts, but gaining a better understanding of how the body works and discovering what you're personally willing to change about your lifestyle in order to reach your goals. For him, that meant trading in the crap he was eating for unprocessed, natural foods and embracing a new-found love for exercise, but never sacrificing his social life (or his love for cold beer). This is the story of how one chain-smoking, cheeseburger-eating, hard-partying rock 'n' roller grew into an avid runner and cyclist and, ultimately, a happier version of himself. He will be the first to tell you: If he could do it, so can you.

Review
"This long-haired, leather-loving nontraditional-diet guru proves that by swapping midnight burger binges and processed junk for exercise and natural foods, you too can get back into your spandex tippling as you go." ---Vanity Fair

From the Back Cover
The Drunk Diet is the beer-soaked tale of a long-haired, leather-clad Rock ’N Roll party-maker who transformed a whiskey-and-5-A.M.-cheeseburger lifestyle into a wildly successful weight-loss regime. If you've ever felt intimidated by the whey-guzzling, creatine-popping models on muscle magazine covers, or unmotivated by ridiculously buff fitness gurus who swear you can look just like them if you simply follow their completely unrealistic, masochistic program...OR if you want to read about a regular guy who managed to change his life for the better, this book is for you.

Not a diet book! It's a lifestyle guide for rockers young and old(er). Great read!!!
By AnalogElvis
This is not a diet book (imo). Very easy to read lifestyle guide for those who like to party like its 1989 but live in a modern day 2016 reality. I love how lüc talks truth about all the crap that Americans eat!! Gmo's processed foods, high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, carbs and sugar. I never heard of lüc until I started rocking hair nation on siriusxm. He seems like a normal working class dude who says it like it is. He makes no excuses. To be honest I didn't really learn a whole lot in this book, but that was never the intention. All he's saying is how he found success in being a healthy rocker!! The same regiment may not work for everyone, but lüc offers many many stories and tips on how and why it works for him and offers a lot of inspiration on how to apply it to your lifestyle. Never heard of a tequila soda until this book, but now that's on my bucket list. Have tequila soda with lüc and say thank you. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who loves booze and rock and looking for a kick in the a** to get off the couch!!! Thank you lüc!

Don't judge a book by its title!
By h.h.m.
Ok the title is a little misleading..but I truly loved the book! I read a review in my Runners World magazine and so I had to check it out! SO good! And the thing I loved its that most people can relate to something about his journey (ok maybe not the rock n roll part) but I enjoyed reading the journey from how he grew up, his lifestyle and food issues and the revelation of turning his life around (I loved the honesty of just wanting to be sexy) dont we all? I love that he still can enjoy himself and look amazing and have a healthy lifestyle! And he does offer some really good tips of being able to enjoy a drink or 2 without feeling we just ruined our entire diet, and workout, eating and running tips that helped him. Its not a "how-to" book but thats what I loved about it..he is witty, funny and smart. It's a big life changer when you decide to become healthy, start working out, running etc and I loved how he shared this, the writing is funny, he shares the good and the bad and he still sounds like a real person, not the crazy trainer writers who just give up all alcohol, never dine out, have no social life and never miss a workout! Those are just impossible standards and then you give up! Read this! Its funny, inspiring and entertaining for both men and women. I promise you will get something out of it! I sure did!

Had ENOUGH of the diet fads, books, infomercials, etc.?
By Amazon Customer
If you are like me, and have had ENOUGH of the diet fads, books, infomercials, etc. where a fitness Goddess /God is the key tag line, then you should consider this book! If the "Cookie Diet" makes you laugh hysterically or the social media posts about losing 50 lbs. in a month because of a body wrap make you shake your head, then you definitely need to purchase `The Drunk Diet'. Lüc Carl is an everyday guy who took a good look at the fads, the scams, and the genetic wonders of the world, then made a decision to change his lifestyle. His opinions are amazingly insightful with just a little bit of deprecation for his former bad habits, topped off with loads of humor that will frequently have the tears rolling while you are nodding in agreement
I'm on my second pass of `The Drunk Diet' because I found Lüc's book to be loaded with gems that I need to further evaluate in order to take a frank look at my own bad habits and lifestyle choices. Case in point: Lüc has worked atypical schedules (like me), and has successfully maintained his lifestyle changes, so that excuse doesn't fly anymore.
If you are easily offended, then this may not be a very good choice for you. If you want to be truly inspired by a neat & unique individual that lays it all out on the bar, then order right now!!

Simply the best microbiology review book
By Michael
This book is great. It covers everything you need to know for step 1, while leaving out all you dont' need to know. The questions are probably the best micro vignette questions out there, and helps reinforce what you learned from the book.

This book is much better than micro made ridiculously simple in terms of boards review. Its written in outline format so you can get through it much faster, and it includes an immunology section that has all you need to know for the immunology questions on the step.

The only thing I don't like is the Rapid Review format. At times the outline format should be written in complete sentences (like the high-yield series) to avoid confusing statments/facts. For me, this seemed especially true in the immunology section, which can be confusing if you have a weak immuno background.

Other than that, this is a great review book. The only review book for micro in my opinion.

Good content, but not nearly comprehensive
By Raggson Media
I am a big fan of the Rapid Review series. The Pathology version by Goljan, as far as I'm concerned, is just as essential as First Aid when it comes to reviewing for class and Step 1. However, Microbiology and Immunology are what I would consider two of the most important topics covered on Step 1 along with pathology, pharmacology, and neuroscience. This book has some good review material in it, but is far from comprehensive. Many topics are discussed extremely briefly or omitted entirely. I could only recommend this book for someone who has Microbiology and Immunology down very well and just needs a super quick refresher. To be honest, First Aid does a better job of covering this material.

*** This review is regarding the content of the book only. I do own this book, but I have not accessed the Student Consult online material. Although I have accessed it for the pathology book in this series. From that material I have deduced that it can't make that big of a difference; but I could very easily be wrong.

Review of Microbiology and Immunology
By Darrell Wu
Perfect for medical microbio class. I used Micro Made easy for class, and after reading this book to review for the boards I would definately recommend it over Micro made easy. The organization is better, it's a shorter text, has an outline format, has excellent tables that while are not as detailed as the micro made easy book are a lot easier to read, and it has everything you need to know for class, which micro made easy does not.

Immuno section is a bit brief but it has all the essentials. I would also recommend reading Immunobiology by Janeway and Medical Microbiology by Murray. Both texts are outstanding and really help you appreciate the subjects.

Review
"The emotional facts of this novel ring true. Jane Futcher has tried to present the confusing, terrifying dilemmas that accompany any step out of the narrow band of acceptable behavior that society tolerates." Dorothy Allison, author of Bastard Out of Carolina, in New York Native

"At last I've read a good book on a serious subject for a young adult that wasn't written by Judy Blume! In fact, I read the whole book thinking it was for me, an older adult, before I found out from the jacket it was really meant for my 11-year-old-but-mature-for-her-age daughter. Jane Futcher may be a first novelist but she's obviously a solid writer if she can produce a story that's interesting to both of us." Lynn Rogers,  Noe Valley Voice

"The characterization is outstanding; the hurt, bewildered Jinx; her loyal roommate; and the smooth, calculating headmaster. Lexie is a superb portrait of a fascinating but unreliable and dangerous personality." The Horn Book magazine

"A good ear for dialogue and a good eye for a scene and a good memory for the sickening incomprehensions of adolescence." --Helen Vendler, professor, author and literary critic for the New York Review of Books, in a letter to the author

"Crush deals directly with the confusion and naïveté that first love and the blossoming of sexual feelings bring out in teenagers." --Bay Windows

From the Author
I was born on February 27, 1947, in St. Louis, Missouri, and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. My first paid writing job was creating live, multi-media high school assembly programs for Rick Trow Productions in Philadelphia.  In 1973 I moved to New York City to work at Harper & Row, Publishers, Inc., where I produced multi-media programs for school audiences. San Francisco was my next stop. There, I wrote Crush on a Hermes typewriter at an oak table by my window on Webster Street. Little, Brown and Company, published Crush in 1981. That same year, Holt, Rinehart and Winston published Marin: The Place, The People, a profile of Marin County, California, with photography by Robert Conover. From 1983 to 1995, I worked as a massage therapist, English teacher and freelance journalist, writing mostly for Plexus, the San Francisco Chronicle and The Slant, a Marin County LGBT newspaper that I helped launch and edit. In 1991, Avon Books published my second novel, Promise Not to Tell, a story about an unhappy teen-aged boy who helps a friend in desperate trouble, creating more trouble along the way but learning a lot about kindness, friendship and the criminal justice system.  I joined the staff of the Marin Independent Journal in 1995, working first as an editorial writer and later a reporter. In 1997, Alyson Publications published Dream Lover, a novel about the improbable affair of two former school friends who fall in love as middle-aged women.  My life took an unexpected turn in 1999, when my partner and I bought one hundred and sixty acres in the mountains of northern Mendocino County. We moved there permanently in 2004, leaving the suburbs behind and learning to love rattlesnakes, bears, coyotes, marijuana growers and each other. Women Gone Wild, released by Women Gone Wild Press in 2012, is the true story of our adventure.  I'm very pleased to be publishing this new edition of Crush, with an introduction by author and psychotherapist Dr. Marny Hall. Crush was one of the first novels of our time to go inside the mind of an adolescent girl in the sexual thrall of another girl. Caught in an endless loop of expectation, shame and self-recrimination, Jinx Tuckwell ricochets between what society expects of her and her fear of losing her heart's desire. To say "no" to the seductive, passionate and unpredictable Lexie Yves becomes tantamount to denying the profound feelings that both trouble and excite Jinx. She can no more refuse Lexie that than she can flip off the stern and punitive headmaster who discovers their secret.  So, enough about me. I'd love to know something about you and how you happened to read Crush. You can find me at janefutcher.com.

A Book I Can Well Relate To. . .
By A Customer
(minor semi-spoilers ahead)
Honest without being bitter, sexual without being pornographic, and like a shot of emotion direct to the heart, "Crush" was a very well-written book that was easy to relate to. I'm a gay teenager, and I'm in a small town that reacts to lesbians the same way the people in the boarding school did. When I read Jinx's feelings towards Lexie, I just sat there thinking "My god, that's me with [insert girl's name here]" (even though I doubt [insert girl's name here] would act as cruel and thoughtless as Lexie did).
Any book that can suck me in with its drama rather than make me feel jaded and cause me to feel the same emotions as the leading character is an instant classic on my list. I had to put down the book several times to tell myself that Lexie was fiction and not actually betraying Jinx (and all her readers). But then I remembered the Lexies in my life, and in the lives of millions of other lesbian teenagers. I wish that I could send a copy of this book to all of those "other lesbian teenagers", with a little note inside saying "You are not alone".

Could be captioned with "based on a true story"
By A Customer
This book rings so true it made my skin crawl at each turn of the page. The depiction of all characters is outstanding, and bundled together in a way to actually make you feel this is a TRUE story. This innocent, good-at-heart girl, incapable of harming a fly, who will rather cry herself to sleep rather than fight back any injustice, fighting to know herself and find her place in the world... Miggin, the faithful friend, supporting her friend no matter the circumstances... Nicky, Woodie, these adults who help perpetuate the hypocrisy, one more willingly and the other by omission of action... Laura and Maddy, epitomes of rich-girl-that-has-to-have-her-way... And last but obviously not least, Lexie, egotistical to the point of making me want to spit in her face, who will hurt anyone and everyone for the sole purpose of achieving her own goals, capable of sacrifying everyone and everything but herself. She seemed to me the perfect picture of a very dangerous sociopath on the loose, on the first stages of developing and forming a cunning, fox-like personality that --you know it and Jinx says it-- will help her go through to life killing herself on her Jaguar or running over anyone that is innocent enough to cross her path.

This book really impressed me, it's one of the few I've read in this "genre" that doesn't have that "sappy" tendency to make it all right in the end. It rings true, cruelly true.

A doormat and a psycho
By M. Smith
I've read a lot of GLBT young adult fiction. I wonder why it is that all the lesbian ones are in first person and told from the butchier girl's perspective? Maybe it's some kind of unwritten rule. Right next to the one that says one of the girls should have a funky name, like Battle or Holland. The main protagonist here is named Jinx, and the action takes place at a boarding school for girls in about 1964. An aspiring artist, Jinx becomes infatuated with an unstable girl at her school named Lexie. Jinx is very doormatish, and lets her actions be dictated by Lexie, to the point that she's doing some incredibly stupid things. When she finally gets a backbone and tries to put a stop to it, Lexie does not react well.

The story is interesting, but I frequently wanted to smack Jinx for lusting such a screwed up girl and putting up with her crap. There's at least some hope that she's going to start sticking up for herself more in the future, but I can't budge the feeling that, if this book had continued into Jinx's later life, we'd find that she'd done what was expected of a girl in that time period, and given up her artistic dreams to find herself a nice husband.

Romance with just a right hint of miracle.
By Ruchi Singh
Rating edit: 3.5/ 5

‘Without You’ is about having faith in your loved ones and destiny. The story explores the depth of young love beautifully and adds just the right miracle at the end to spice up the story. I loved the twist the author throws at the end.

20 years-old Ananya a final year engineering student, comes to spend her vacation with her Grandmother, and falls in love with handsome, wealthy, Dr. Arjun. Arjun is equally besotted with beautiful, talented Ananya. Their love blossoms under her Grandmother’s blessings. Things go downhill when Arjun’s mother comes to know about their romance and thinks of Ananya as a gold-digger. They separate and Ananya is devastated. She tries to pick up the threads of life with the help of her family, friends, and succeeds to an extent, but then Arjun comes back in her life…

Ananya's character is well flushed out as an innocent, bubbly, but emotional 20-something. Her emotions have been captured in detail and beautifully. I felt Arjun should have been given more pages in the story. The middle part of the story seemed a little stretched.

The narration is picturesque and full marks to the author for drawing a scenic story with words. The style and voice fluctuate between contemporary and victorian by using certain words which are seldom used now.

All in all a nice plot and an emotional romance. Looking forward to read more from the author.

Good debut effort. Suitable for teens/young adults over mature audiences.
By Shantala @ SHANAYA TALES
Rating Edit: 2.5 Stars

Without You follows the life of a young girl - Ananya, as she finds love, then loses it, and then tries to find herself, while picking up the broken pieces of her heart.

The story starts with 20 year-old Ananya visiting her grandmother in Sreepuram. There, she falls head-over-heels in love with the very handsome Dr. Arjun, who works in a hospital, in-spite of the fact that he is the scion of the multi-million dollar Shine Group. Arjun, too, falls in love with Ananya, and soon they even have the grandmother’s blessing.

However, some unfavourable circumstances, lead to Ananya and Arjun going their separate ways, and Ananya’s grief over the loss of her love, propels her into a dark depression. The plot then follows Ananya’s life, as she tries to come to terms with her loss, and move on.

Will she be ever be able to completely forget Arjun? Will Ananya and Arjun cross paths again? If they do - would they still be in love with each other? More importantly - will their love find the strength to conquer the hurdles in their path, this time around? - these are the questions that get answered in the rest of the book.

My Thoughts:

I had distinct experiences while reading different sections; so I am going to review the book in those sections/chunks.

The beginning ( First 25% of the book)

As I started reading, the first thing that caught my attention, was the vivid description of the picturesque Sreepuram. Describing places is clearly the author’s strong suit, and she has demonstrated that several times in this book - from Sreepuram to Bangalore to Dubai.

My biggest grouse with this section is something which is also my biggest pet peeve while reading romances - Insta Love! (or instant love)

If the book is in the genre of romance - I need to see the characters falling in love, and see the relationship progress. The love story is central to a romance novel, so I don’t like short cuts here.

Which is why, insta-love (an often used short cut) puts me off, and this book had a clear case of the same - Ananya was in love with Arjun, before she even met him. For Arjun too - it was love at first-sight!

Now, I have read enough romances to understand that, yes, there are times when a story/book starts with one person harboring a secret (or not so secret) crush on the other person. But even in those situations - the progression of the love story is shown, which makes it okay (Case in point - Against All Rules by Summerita Rhyane). But in Without You - there was no development or progression shown.

Also, several things (plot/dialogue etc) in this section came across as immature, and juvenile (to me). There was too much repetition, and no subtlety. And this would have been understandable, and completely acceptable, if the characters were 16 or 18, but Ananya was 20 and Arjun was 26.

Arjun there and falls head over heels in love. As it often happens
By Aathira
From the book cover: When Ananya, a bubbly twenty-year old engineering student, reaches her Grandmother's house in Sreepuram on a month long vacation, romance is the last thing on her mind. However, she meets Dr. Arjun there and falls head over heels in love.

What indeed is true love?

Travel with Ananya to the picturesque Sreepuram, face the chaos of Bengaluru, and relish the warmth of magical Dubai in this heartwarming tale of love, betrayal, friendship and miracles.

My thoughts: When I finally started reading, Preethi managed to surprise me. There were quite a few plot twists that I did not see coming. Coming to the story and characters, they are well etched, especially that of Ananya, her grandmother and friends. Coming to Arjun, another version of Mr. Darcy, though he is in love with Ananya, he has his own flaws, which makes him believable. Of course, I could relate to Ananya and love her a teeny bit more.

The description of the places, be it Sreepuram, Bengaluru or Dubai, the author has done full justice in bringing out a clear picture in the minds of readers who haven't been there. Living in Dubai myself, it was fun to see this place through Ananya's eyes. Turning points in the story like Ananya trying to commit suicide and later her coping mechanisms in dealing with her depression are expressed very well making it easy to relate to.

Ananya's traits are borrowed from the author herself, like her love for painting and reading and journaling. This is not just a romance novel, it is a story on relationships and I loved the various themes that Preethi has explored, be it the relationship of Ananya with her grandmother who plays an important role or the friends that Ananya makes in Dubai, they all have a vital place in the book.

I do not want to give too much of the story away, as it will take away the fun in reading it. But read this one, it is an excellent debut and I'm definitely looking forward to the next book from Preethi. The book is well edited and has impeccable language, as is to be expected if you are familiar with the author's blog and her writings, which in itself makes the overall read a pleasant one. A light read, I read the book in a little less than a day. Read it and fall in love!

Psychedelia: An Ancient Culture, A Modern Way Of Life, by Patrick Lundborg

A groundbreaking book from the author of the highly-acclaimed Acid Archives: Psychedelia: An Ancient Culture, A Modern Way of Life is a product of 20 years research and Patrick Lundborg's greatest achievement. A larger number of people are exploring psychedelic states of mind in the world today than at any other point in history. Their shared experiences form the outline of a vast underground culture, whose steady influence upon society can be traced across thousands of years, back to Amerindian plant drug cults and the psychedelic celebrations in ancient Greece that gave birth to our Western society. But the full scope of this psychedelic culture, and its many expressions in the past, has remained poorly understood or even unknown. Psychedelia has usually been taken as a metaphor, or a symptom of something else, even though its true nature is singular and unparalleled. Psychedelia by Patrick Lundborg is the first-ever book to present psychedelic culture in its full complexity and range. Out of a colorful history that spans 3,500 years, emerges a philosophy and way of life that is as dazzling and rich as the psychedelic experience itself. As this book shows, psychedelia is a living underground culture, engaged in constant dialogue with its mainstream counterpart. Psychedelia's creative, visionary presence in art, rock music and pop culture is thoroughly examined, highlighting many unique and at times unknown works and traditions, from William Blake to Philip K. Dick, from Eden Ahbez to Shpongle, from Haight-Ashbury to the beaches of Goa. The 20th century's misguided attempts to reduce psychedelia into a branch of psychology or religion are given a critical, sometimes controversial look. A case is made for psychedelic philosophy, a fresh, unprejudiced model to replace the failed interpretations of the past. In the third millennium, psychedelic culture may be standing on the brink of a mystery greater than anything encountered in the past. This mystery comes forth in chapters on ayahuasca and DMT, and has reverberations far outside the realms of psychedelia, cutting into vital questions of consciousness and evolution. Most of all, psychedelia is a celebration of life, in the here and now and in the deep realms of inner-space. The final chapters of Psychedelia discuss the challenges and rewards of the psychedelic experience, as mastered by shamans and teachers from various entheogenic cultures.

About the Author
Patrick Lundborg (b. 1967) has a B.Sc in Information Science from Stockholm University, with additional studies in Classic Philosophy and History of Religion. After retiring from a professional career as a project manager, he works full-time as a writer-researcher in the field of psychedelic culture. Among his earlier works are The Age Of Madness (1992), a guide to 1960s garage music, and 13th Floor Elevators The Complete Reference File (2002). The Acid Archives (2006-2010), a pioneering study of underground 1960s-70s music from North America, is Lundborg s most popular work to date, having gone through two editions and five reprintings, and receiving favorable reviews in leading magazines such as Mojo and The Wire. In addition to the books and the Lysergia.com website he edits, Lundborg has written magazine articles, monographs and album liner notes.

Everything you always wanted to know about psychedelia...
By Dema
Seems like there is a broad standard work for the world of psychedelics published every 12-14 years or so. In the early 2000s there was Daniel Pinchbeck's book, while the late '80s saw "Acid Dreams" and "Storming Heaven". Back in the mid-70s we had the Psychedelic Encyclopedia and also the High Times encyclopedia. Now, finally, a work has arrived that continues the tradition of not only introducing the psychedelic universe to newcomers, but also to expand and illuminate the knowledge of experienced psycho-nauts. "Psychedelia" by Patrick Lundborg reflects massive preparations (20 years according to the author) using source material as diverse as old occult magazines and the philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty (whose mescaline experiments surprised me).

As a scholarly-historic work that goes back to the ancient kykeon and soma, "Psychedelia" fulfills its task and brings up a number of little-known factoids to outline an "alternative spiritual culture" of our society. But what makes this book a thrill is not the arcane literature references and footnotes, but that it dares to be entertaining and even provocative. Many things assumed "given" in the psychedelic landscape are questioned, and things that have never been properly explained (example: the Tim Leary group's inability to separate LSD from psilocybin -- like Lundborg states, these are two very different realms) are spotlighted. The psychiatric LSD research of the 1950s-60s is laid bare with reckless guinea pig experiments on schizophrenics and other defenseless people. Their big research endeavor led to nothing, and like Lundborg implies, someone should look into what may be a medical scandal that has never been exposed.

The anthropologists and ethnobotanists come off better, even if there is an intriguing suggestion that the reason for the slow research progress on the native drugs of Amazonia (like ayahuasca) was because the local tribes purposely fooled the Western field scientists, in order to keep their rituals secret. Lundborg makes a case for this in a chapter on "entheogenic" plant drugs. The coverage of ayahuasca and DMT is where the book particularly stands out, as there has been (to my knowledge) no full-scale coverage of these drugs, their traditions and effects before. There are trip reports you won't believe! In addition to the psychedelic drugs in themselves, much space is given to their relation to western mainstream/pop/underground cultures, such as a fun look at hidden clues in Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and a critique of James Cameron's "Avatar". The Haight-Ashbury scene of the '60s is detailed from a modern perspective far from your romanticized baby-boomer recollections.

Two favorite chapters where I couldn't think of any similar works dealt with how psychedelic drug users approach religious systems like buddhism, hippie cults like Father Yod's family, and the "up the country" '70s communes. Here and elsewhere, Lundborg brings up meaningful and often startling perspectives by his insistence on putting the psychedelic experience at the center, and then observing cultural and social phenomena through this colorful prism.

With 500+ pages there's much more to mention but I have to stop here, and simply say: Patrick Lundborg's book fills an increasingly wide knowledge gap in the psychedelic world, and anyone with even the slightest interest in that world will find "Psychedelia" useful and frequently enchanting.

Are you experienced?
By John L Murphy
This is a substantial book on an often ephemeral theme. This Swedish information theorist, and past chronicler of underground, garage, and acid rock, turns to the wider contexts driving the sounds of the Sixties and since. It's a welcome contribution and a serious, academic work.

Beginning three-and-a-half thousand years ago, unfolding over five-hundred closely printed pages and half a million words, presenting two decades of research, Patrick Lundborg explores "the world's largest mystery cult." Rather than reducing psychedelia to psychology or religion, he envisions a philosophy. His foreword explains how Edmund Husserl's theory of phenomenology melded his study of Aldous Huxley and hallucinations to trigger "several hundred pages of speculative thoughts." Inspired and intrigued by the elusive lack of a label for his pursuit, he provides two sections, corresponding with the two cycles of psychedelic culture.

First, the Eleusinian Mysteries of the ancient Greeks begin an historical magical mystery tour. Lundborg presents recent analyses pinpointing the catalyst for the storied inner journeys undertaken by a coterie of initiates. The Greeks brewed an infested barley-mint concoction which sparked hallucinations resembling those of ergot, refined by Albert Hoffman in the 1940s as LSD-25. Between these two events, part one unfolds the range of "an ancient culture".

In thoughtful vignettes integrating everyone from The Fisher King to Tiki-exotica musician Martin Denny, this delves into hundreds of figures who've established careers and courted notoriety by daring to leave their convention behind, by ingesting substances or immersing themselves in situations open to what Husserl's follower Eugen Fink summed up as "a wonder in the face of the world". This suggestive phrase invites us, I may add, to contemplate these terms: does the psychedelic adept make the "face" of the average human "wonder" as a few rebels depart the mundane "world" by experimental inner journeys? Or does such an adventurer witness the "world" in its true "face" through a burst of released, inherent "wonder"?

Bookended by old and new decoctions from barley's alchemists, part one sets up twelve chapters which crisscross the globe and time. Hoffman, Huxley, the McKenna brothers, Alan Watts, the Grateful Dead, Owsley, Tim Leary: while many names will be familiar as our near-contemparies, appearing as if characters encountered in a vast picaresque novel, the pace remains steady and the learning simmers into a satisfying, if thick blend. Best taken in small doses, given the small font and formidable size (one drawback: the paperback feels enormous, relegating its index to online access only), it's a solid resource on what's been too often left for silly flights of fancy or sophomoric pronouncements an ephemeral topic. Lundborg, as a diligent tour guide through psychedelia in theory and practice, keeps moving forward in time and space. But like his swirling subject, he cannot help pursuing byways, tracking trains of thought, and wandering off on rewarding detours.

Here's a sample of the range in part one: from Neoplatonism to Shakespeare's The Tempest; ayahuasca to DMT; Yeats to peyote; Blake to the first Western Buddhist Beats; Swedenborg to psilocybin; Forbidden Planet to Apocalypse Now. A handy index is missed, as the material can prove enormous to keep track of (beyond a thematic table of contents) as it accumulates, However, its gathering in a compendium enhanced by a blog and pdf index via the author's Lysergia website attests to his ongoing commitment to understanding this notoriously caricatured and misinterpreted subject.

To exemplify the depth of Lundborg's printed excursions, dip into a random page (288) to find a discussion of the 13th Floor Elevators' undeservedly obscure cult 1967 album Easter Everywhere, graced with nods to lyrical allusions to Robert Heinlein's arguably too-well-known cult novel Stranger in a Strange Land, and its predecessor for a previous century of exotic Western seekers, The Rubaiyat. Cymbeline and The Waste Land earn inclusion, to express the meaning of "dust" in on side two as a "life-embracing world-view around a word usually associated with death".

The second section examines psychedelia as "a modern way of life": it flows from preceding treatment of the explosion of interest in drugs and spirituality in the 1960s. Lundborg divides the ancient from the modern era in 1963: that concludes the "Scientific-Artistic Phase" and introduces the counterculture. Ken Kesey, Alan Watts, Allen Ginsberg, Richard Alpert, and Tim Leary's roles, familiar to many, find juxtaposition with now less celebrated proponents such as Ralph Metzner and the Diggers, who urged radical transformation given the freedom conceived via hallucinogens.

Concerning liberation, the political and spiritual ramifications of such advocacy, the author notes, did not always mesh well with imported academic theories-- or with other novel systems imported. Lundborg astutely warns of the fallacy of many "Western psychedelicists" to too "readily accept the religious-mythical label from a remote and highly complex culture as an explanation for a personal experience," when it comes to spurious applications of such texts as that popularized as The Tibetan Book of the Dead. From 1964, one recalls "Leary-Alpert-Metzner's generally useless guide-book" The Psychedelic Experience as illustrating this "presumed overlap". Instead, Lundborg urges one to enjoy without trying to bias or label the encounter within an esoteric mind state.

Later coverage roams into the rave culture, garage bands, stoner rock, shamans and chillouts, Ecstasy and DMT, and comparisons between LSD and ayahuasca. Philip K. Dick's attempt to describe his VALIS visions enters a chapter reflecting on--as one subtitle has it--"poetry, gibberish and eloquence" appropriately. Lundborg calmly tackles slippery subjects: how can a report on a non-verbal experience be rendered in print? Perhaps film, art and music (also treated here; a few brilliant color and sepia plates try to depict venerable and fresh adepts under the influence) may better capture the plunge or the flight.

Therefore, in challenging closing chapters, Lundborg posits a "Unified Psychedelic Theory" that charts the aftermath of "an effective dose of a major serotonergic psychedelic" on four levels of a "General Trip Model". This necessitates brain chemistry, multiple realities, and perceptions that defy facile reduction. The heft of this volume delivers the results.

Lundborg presents a "supra-state" which "birthed our consciousness" but which we don't rely upon for daily survival nowadays. Beyond this level, we can "poke holes through our common mindstate" so as "to peek into" a higher state. Enough of a dose, and "we may put our heads through the wall" and communicate with this state, which has accompanied us since we were born. On the final page of this massive, energetic, and reflective study, we find that this Stockholm scholar has barely nudged open what Blake, Huxley, and a certain rock band testified to as the "doors of perception".

Are You Experienced?
By Evan Gill
Heard about this book from Dr. Bruce Damer, on Joe Rogan's show. The amount of detail in this book is remarkable, and I was able to discover tons of psychedelic albums that haven't received much press, but are very very good. He mentions the influence of the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Donovan on the other artists of the time, and how originally Jefferson Airplane and the Byrds didn't really utilize psychedelic rock in the early stages, but later learned how to produce master albums. I love how Lundborg went into details like the Diggers in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury, a group I've never heard of. His detailing of Eleusis, and underground psychedelic cultures in Europe post Eleusis and the LSD scene in the 1960's with Owsley, Alpert, Leary, Kesey and many others went very deep into all the production of it, and the doses used at the time. He lets you know the differences with LSD, psilocybin, DMT, mescaline, and is all about ensuring safety and insightful trips. He draws from Terence McKenna many times, and I have loved McKenna's viewpoints for awhile now. Fantastic book for anyone who would like to perturb their consciousness and think about what is really going on here, on this planet, floating through space.
