Very Misleading

I recently came to look into this book after one of the authors started spamming a Pagan forum with advertising this book. She came onto the site,advertised, and never answered a single question that was asked of her. All of her responses were basically,"Well if you just buy my book..." which was very shady.

If you're serious about learning neo-Wicca and such, please look elsewhere. Thea Sabin or Amber K. are good ones to start with.

Wiccapedia does not have accurate information, and is just a bunch of glitter and nonsense. Their use of "white witch" and "angelic Wicca" are prime examples of inaccuracies. I can't believe I'm saying this, but this is worse than the garbage Silver Ravenwolf writes. Shawn and Leanna obviously have no idea what Wicca actually is and they have no right to publish material about it.

If you want to be taken seriously in the Pagan community, skip over this. You won't learn anything valid. The authors have made it clear that they think the witchcraft community is stupid enough to buy into this.

You do NOT want to be labeled a "fluffy bunny" in the pagan community.Save yourself from being harassed and learn from more credible sources. The criticism is harsh, maybe, but if you're dedicated to learning it will only help you grow as a person in your spirituality. You'll get respect and people will actually listen to what you have to say if you are able to back up your claims. This book will not give you the tools to gain respect, or to help you to grow in any form of religious witchcraft. It will only fill your head with lies, all so the authors can steal your money. Don't be taken advantage of!

Good book for beginners

This is the first book I ever read about wicca and it definitely got me going to figure out more. For people that already know about wicca, I'm not sure this book is really for you. However, I found it useful as I'm just getting started. It touches briefly on a lot of different topics like ouija, spells, crystals, herbs, animals, dreams and so on; as a result I have an idea for other things that I want to find out more about. I recommend this book, its easy to read and keeps you interested and it looks nice too.

I'm very happy to have bought this book! Although I'm not brand new to Wicca, I found a lot of value in reading this information in an organized, concise manner. Many of our favorite Wiccan authors can be kind of verbose and in my experience, don't put a lot of effort into structuring the information in a clear manner. I would recommend this book as THE first book to anyone interested in learning more about Wicca. I'd also recommend it to anyone looking to fill in any gaps or holes in their understanding of practice. It might not be for someone who's actively practiced for a long number or years, but I think there is valuable information in here, even for those who aren't brand new. The pages are nice and thick and the cover is beautifully. It's the most well-made Wicca book I've got and will hold up to being used as a reference. Would love to see more books from this author....perhaps expanding on what is included here.

The true value is with the online material with a limited one-month time frame for access ...

The Wiley “Dummies” books usually have a brief “Foolish Assumptions” section in the preface. One of the assumptions is that you’re serious about studying for the CPA exam, however, I do think this book would also be quite appropriate for those who aren’t quite sure they even want to enter into the field of accounting. A “Dummies” book is the perfect place to explore any field. For example, if you are in high school, what better way to find out a potential career path than checking out this type of book?

If you are truly serious about studying for the exam rather than lightly exploring the topic, I’d recommend considering the Wiley CPAexcel Exam Review 2014 Study Guide July Set . This is a thorough, expansive study guide to the exam. With the CPA Exam for Dummies, you do have a code that will give you one-month access to the online course. The value is debatable because if you have limited time to work with the course, it’s not of much value.

In this book you are introduced to the world of accounting and will learn about the basics such as responsibilities, what a CPA does, types of positions, etc. The value, for someone who is just considering the field and perhaps the exam, are the subsequent chapters which deal with concepts and questions found on the actual exam.

The real value, of course, is access to the online material. Once entered into the trial, you will have access to the real meat and potatoes material, something I would have rather seen in this book (at least in part). There are 4,000 questions / answers, 164 CPA enhanced simulations, and you can track your strengths and weaknesses. Personally, I’d much rather see this in book form. Because of the limited access to the online material the quoted $575 value is skewed, especially if you don’t have time to work through the material. This is one “Dummies” book that I’d take a pass on.

Well structured, simple & clear text & graphics, compact

1118813731 (CPA Exam For Dummies, 1st ed.) is a very well published and competent textbook for beginners. It is not Wiley CPAexcel Exam Review, but also 10 times cheaper, covers all 4 aspects, and contains enough questions to sufficiently check preparation for CPA exam. The content of its only 286 pages of a larger than the standard size for the series is clearly divided into 6 parts, 18 chapters, and under 1000 multiple (4) choice questions/problems. Some questions/problems are preceded by a short description. The question numbers are boldfaced allowing to easier grasp the pages at 1st glance. After the initial reading, it can be used just for warming up.

The front pastedown (endpaper) contains a scratch off access code to more than 4000 additional questions, 164 enhanced simulations, and tracking strengths & weaknesses online free for 1 month on the companion website. Approx. 56 pages of the book are shown by the Amazon.com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function. What cannot be seen is that the book is well printed on decent paper, and the flimsy cover, typical for the series, is prone to creasing.

A promotional piece for Wiley's online study resource aimed at CPA exam candidates.

Just OK. I'm not really sure who this book was targeted at. At first glance I thought it was aimed at people who were not accounting majors who were curious about the CPA, and wanted to know all about it. I fall into that target market since I took the exam way back in 1984 and 1985, and had heard the exam format had changed. I was curious how the exam had changed since I had taken and passed it successfully. But after I got into the book, and was reading it, it quickly became apparent that this book did not really have a target market at all. Instead, it is not much of a book; it's a promotional piece for Wiley's online study resource for those people who already know they want to take the exam. And anyone who is gearing up to take the exam already knows everything (and more) that is covered in this book.

What you get from this book has little to do with the content included between its covers. The intro and Part 1 were a joke. In fact, they were insulting for anyone who has studied accounting in college. Parts 2 through 5 covered each of the four sections of the CPA exam: BEC, FAR, AUD, and REG. They were incredibly superficial, and a waste of time to read actually. The entire book is really housed in the book's appendix entitled: Linking with Wiley CPAexcel. By purchasing this book you get a month's “free” access to the online study resource Wiley offers for CPA exam candidates to use to help prepare to pass the exam. I say “free” because the price you paid for the book is really the price you have paid to get a month access to the online material.

When I prepared for the exam Wiley published a couple of big fat books that resembled phone books at a glance. Gleim has its offering in print format, too. I skipped these publications, and went with the Becker LIVE CPA prep course that lasted 5 months. My hunch about the Wiley online materials is that it is little more than a digital presentation of what used to be in its print editions way back when. Since I did not use the Wiley materials to study by, I really cannot say whether or not they are a good way to go. I can tell you they are one of the cheapest ways to go – so if you already have a sound knowledge of the things you need to know to pass the CPA exam, then you'll save some money to use the Wiley stuff to study by. 3 stars!

I have enjoyed the book, and I would definitely recommend it to novices and experts.

I have enjoyed the book, and I would definitely recommend it to novices and experts. I am a DNA methylation professional, I work on molecular mechanism of DNA methylation. I bought the book to have one place reference for the phenotypic aspects of epigenetics. I think that the author did an excellent job of balancing the text for different types of readers. The author gives the names of the researchers that did some key discoveries, so the interested reader can always go to google.scholar and pubmed for the original publications. The simple language, numerous comparisons and explanations makes this book readable to the people without expertise in epigenetics, but also to an average graduate with BSc degree.

The book is not for people interested in molecular aspects of DNA methylation, but it does not need to be, since such text would not be for a wide audience. My only critique would be that the author should add few more figures, that could make the text bigger pleasure to read and browse. If there are about 10 more drawings in the text I would give it full five stars. I have no doubt that with rapid development of epigenetics, this book will come in newer editions. With few additional drawings, it will be a five star read. One missing figure could be changes in DNA methylation through embryonic development and gametogenesis. Congratulations to the author, Cheers to all readers.

One of my top 10 Science Books of All TIme

This is an extraordinary book in the quality of writing, diagrams, coverage, and insights. I read an earlier 2011 book on epigenetic and this book is far, far better in every way. This area is one of the most intriguing in biological science and revises our understanding of everything from evolution to the mechanics in genetic translation and expression. I will re-read it soon to better appreciate the ideas and just to re-experience the joy I felt when reading it for the first time.

Worth reading twice, at least.

I obtained this book via interlibrary loan. After reading and a couple days reflection, I ordered the book from Amazon. Oscar Wilde once said that a book not worth reading twice is probably not worth reading once. I strongly feel this book passes the OW test with flying colors.

I did not understand everything I read but, so what? I understood the general idea and since I have followed the so-called Human Genome revolution, it has certainly modified and vastly improved my understanding of life, all life. It should also be remembered that science is moving very fast in recent decades and, there will, no doubt, be better and more more knowledge via the bio revolution in the years to come. Do not depend on the media and TV to keep you abreast of these developments. TV hype and limited time cannot even scratch the surface if you want even a basic understanding of this and other, complex subjects.

Francis Crick boasted of having discovered the "Secret of Life" when he, a physicist, discovered the shape of the DNA molecule. It was a great discovery, but thinking that it, and it alone was the Secret of Life is an exaggeration. Followed, of course by similar claims when the human genome was fully mapped. A note of caution based on such claims might be that, we should not, think, that epigenetics is the final answer to our struggle to understand LIFE, per se, in its totality. We may never get to that point but efforts should never cease and we are lucky indeed to have such writers as Nessa Carey to give us a ring side seat into watching these developments unfold. Thank you Nessa.

This is a great book for plastic surgery fellows. Especially like the section on hand soft tissue coverage, but all areas are pretty solid. Authors are a mix of ortho and plastic.

A very good book for the beginner but not much for anyone over and above that

The back cover of this book has the following description:
“No scary graphs. No techie diagrams. No camera-club jargon. Read this if you want to take great photographs walks you through the fundamentals of composition, exposure, light, lenses and the all-important art of seeing without drowning you in technobabble”.
Does the book fulfill this description? The answer is yes. There is a brief description of the main (and basic) elements of photography such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO along with many photographs that illustrate these concepts well. However, in this reviewer’s opinion, many of the photographs could have been more explicit in that there could have been photographs showing the impact of incremental changes in these on the photograph. For example, a series of photographs of moving objects that show how high shutter speed freezes action and how, as shutter speed is slowed, it is blurred. The same applies for aperture (on depth of field impacts) as well as the impact of higher ISO speeds (on noise). Nevertheless the book does illustrate these concepts fairly well with the included photographs. It’s just that subtleness is lost by looking only at extremes and not incremental minor changes.

The book also discusses well some of the major factors behind composition such as framing (i.e., rule of thirds), symmetry and flow of lines and curves across pictures. However, due to the books very short length, these discussions are very short (2 pages each if the accompanying photograph is included). Again, however, the basics are brought across. The last part of the book focuses on “seeing” as an art. The coverage in this area, as the rest in the book, is again quite short. The basics are brought across again, in a clear and concise manner.

For anyone with an intermediary or advanced knowledge of photography, everything in this book has probably been seen a million times before. Hence for that audience this book would be of very little value. That audience, though, would probably still appreciate many of the photographs in the book. But it should be stressed that this is not the intended audience for the book.

In short, this book is a very good short, concise introduction to photography for the beginner. In about an hour or so of reading that audience can learn more than any other book (this reviewer has seen) for that same time frame. However, to learn more they would have to read other material. For example, on the art of seeing this reviewer would recommend also reading Bryan Peterson’s “Learning to See Creatively: Design, Color and Composition in Photography”. Many of Peterson’s other books would also be of interest (i.e., “Understanding Shutter Speed”).

The Perfect Little Book for Aspiring Teenage Photographers or Anyone Getting Started!

As both a parent and published pro photographer, I secretly harbor a desire that my kids will one day grow to love photography as much as I do (I may be holding my breath for a long time on this one).

Sure, I’ve taken them on photo-specific excursions hoping to light a fire – and have attempted on numerous occasions to pass on my knowledge and insights. But I might as well be speaking to a brick wall. If you have kids, you probably know what I’m talking about. Try and explain the basic foundation of exposure (the triad of shutter, aperture and ISO) to them for example, and they’ll think you’re speaking Mandarin.

All joking aside, kids always think that they’re experts in every subject – and the last people they want advice from are their parents, regardless of our level of expertise. Often, the best learning comes from outside sources – and many kids are turning to friends, social media (like Instagram or YouTube) to gain much-needed knowledge. That’s not to say that today’s kids can’t learn something from a book that doesn’t have to do with school – as many do enjoy reading.

You could try getting them to read a tried and true photography book like Bryan Peterson’s, “Understanding Exposure” – but truth be told, teenagers really don’t have the patience. It’s a great book for people starting out, but it’s way too technical for today’s kids with short attention spans. Today’s youth are more likely to pick up a copy of “Hunger Games” than any book on photography.

So yesterday I was with my 14-year-old daughter in one of those ultra-hip clothing stores, and saw an intriguing book on the shelf. Like any good father who is utterly obsessed about photography, I purchased it.

It took me about an hour or so to read it from front to back, but I was pretty impressed with the content and format. I’m one of those people that believe that learning never stops – and even well-read individuals can be reminded about the fundamentals every now and then.

I loved the fact that the author comes right out and tells you that the book is not about technical – it has no graphs, no techie diagrams and no camera club jargon. Instead, it’s packed with easy-to-comprehend tips and insights – along with some pretty iconic images (from photographers like Bresson and Salgado) to demonstrate the author’s various points. It is also written in a playful manner and laid out in a minimalistic polished fashion, with almost an Apple aesthetic to it.

The book is split into five short sections, covering composition, exposure, light, lenses and seeing. Concepts like leading lines and rule of thirds are covered, as are often misunderstood topics like depth of field or light quality. But they are explained in a surprisingly simple manner that anyone can understand.

Sure, the book only skims the surface – and maybe the author could have elaborated a bit more on why some of the featured iconic images really work. But he gets his point across in a way that any teenager can understand and appreciate (without being boring). It wasn’t meant to be an in-depth exploration of photography, just a primer that will hopefully plant the seed for future learning. And undoubtedly, your kids will become better photographers from having read this book.

Today’s youth may not be equipped with expensive DSLRs or serious mirrorless cameras (as often their weapon of choice is the iPhone, Android or Polaroid /Fuji Instax Mini), but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have some interest in photography (even if they're taking pictures of their last restaurant meal or their new fingernail polish color, lol).

I'm always amused by people who downgrade photography book reviews simply because the book doesn't cover every conceivable topic known to man, or it doesn't go deep enough. This book was not meant to accomplish those goals. If you want a boring technical manual - look elsewhere.

It will never replace a book like “Understanding Exposure” – but sometimes you’ve got to take baby steps. Highly recommended!

Great starter book for anyone who wants to learn HOW to take greater photos. I am a professional industrial photographer and have also photographed sports for decades. I am always looking to improve my craft and this book gave me some great tips. Most of it, I already knew, but the language and presentations make it a great book to start off with. I love the simple language and easy to view diagrams. If you are just starting out, this is an ideal book for you. Even with years under my belt, there were some new things in this book. Best of all, you can make a few notes and take away the essence of this book.

i cant understand who in their right mind would pay 3.00 for a chapter of a book! i love this series, but i can not pay that much for 37 pages without feeling like an idiot. there are a lot of good books - that are complete story lines- that i can purchase for the same price or a little more. so sad that kelly has decided to gauge her customers

I am hearing the amazon changed the way it pays the authors for their work. Well regardless, I can't let myself pay $3 for a one chapter book when there are probably 15 more chapter or so to go. I just stopped myself from reading anymore of this series. I will just have to wonder what happened. I was hooked but i just kicked the habit. I am considering cancelling my unlimited acct if this continues with other authors.

Amazingly, given the enduring popularity of its subject, this is the first book solely about the Miura to appear in almost 30 years – the last being Coltrin and Marchet's 1982 effort, reprinted in '99. Joe Sackey has given a large part of his life to promoting the Miura cause and if at times his prose seems a little breathless, that's simply a reflection of his sheer enthusiasm. He's done a fine job. While he's a Miura evangelist, he's also quick to point out the flaws in its history – not least the flexible approach to chassis records. Besides a large number of archive photos, there are superb studio shoots of several. individual Miuras, including the one-off ZN75 show car – which no longer exists, having recently been re-restored to its original, also unique, Spider configuration. The picture editing could have been more ruthless in places – similar pics appear on successive pages – but there's an awful lot of valuable material in this book, which, at least for the foreseeable future, really is the Miura owner's 'Bible.'

'Bible' is a bold claim for any motoring title, and Lamborghini collector Sackey certainly crams this 268-page book with information and illustrations. Chapters cover the Miura's gestation, model development, the Spiders and super-rare Jotas, chassis numbers, maintenance, restoration and driving appeal. There's a spotlight on engineer Paolo Stanzani – which, surprisingly, offers more insight into the Countach than the Miura – but key figures such as stylist Marcello Gandini and New Zealand-born development engineer Bob Wallace get only token coverage in the text. There are plenty of color images of restored cars, including stylish studio work and action shots, but much of the content is thinly spread. Also, there's no list of specialists, index or bibliography. A seductive work, but no bible

Including acres of period factory images, interviews and a complete factory chassis register, this is the ultimate book for any Miura fan.

About the Author
Joe has been a Lamborghini and Ferrari owner and enthusiast for over 20 years, and regularly writes at club and magazine levels. He organized the first-ever Miura Reunion in California in 2000, and also facilitated the sale of the first million dollar Lamborghini, the Miura Roadster, in 2006. As an archivist and historian, he has become closely involved with the International Lamborghini Registry, and often lends his considerable experience to others looking to locate and restore that special car. Joe lives in California with his wife Margaret, their three children, and a few old classics.

The Lamborghini Miura Bible is a Great source,I Love this Book! Great Photography and Archive Photos as well in-depth history.Well-Written,My only compliant would be That even though the Jota is covered(The Original) there is no color photos only the Archive photos and no Jota Replicas or Replicas covered period.The book is very Much Miura SV,I would have like to have seen More Jota Coverage and the Jota SVR Replicas as well as Replicas in General. I understand the Author Prefers the Miura's "Pure" lines as opposed to the Jota.I also would have like to have seen More Photographs and bigger spreads,yes I am aware it has plenty of both but I have no qualms with this great book. I tried to email the author regarding getting the book signed but he never got back to me I know he is busy(in The Restoration Business and Collector).I hope he comes out with another Miura Book since there is mention of perhaps a Future Miura book according to Mr.Sackey in the book if more Information comes to Light.The Publisher Veloce did a Splendid job as they do with most of their books and the book covers Chassis,Colors,Options,some notable Owners Like Miles Davis/Sinatra Etcera,The Author is also willing the admit the car's faults besides it's beauty,How to Maintain and How to find one and which Model to find(SV of Course!).Overall, I highly Recommend it as this was When Lamborghini Had Beautiful Cars and not the Volkswagen Owned Cars of today.(with some exceptions) and when Styling was better than today's cars and I am 31 I can appreciate Cars of then compared to now.

An excellent, original work and a "must have" for Miura fans

Although the title is somewhat presumptuous, this is actually an excellent book. There are a couple of things that make this book unique among Lamborghini books. First, Sackey is not only a huge Miura enthusiast and evangelist, but has also owned and restored several Miura SVs, so his writing is based not just on great research (which he's obviously done) but experience in ownership and restorations. Second, he has taken a lot of effort to find period photos that haven't been published before. Most Lamborghini books recycle many of the period photos, but this book only reuses a few. It includes a serial number listing, which is more accurate than the one in the Coltrin book, but Sackey doesn't list which cars were reissued, nor which numbers were P400s, S's, and SVs, or total production counts (although it does list counts for the SV). Perhaps this is a very difficult goal given poor factory records and cars being changed over the years. I'd like to see more descriptions of P400 and S cars. Joe has owned SVs and the book seems biased toward that variant. Overall, a great book and a "must have" for Miura fans.

Like the Miura, this book is beautiful. Fittingly, it is a large, serious, heavy book with high gloss pages to fully capture the beauty of the subject, but also has detailed technical discussions of all the models, including rare factory test beds like the mythical JOTA. It isn't a puff piece, however. Joe takes an honest look at the Miura (certainly not a perfect car) from the standpoint of a lifelong enthusiast who has to deal with the practical realities of ownership. I highly look forward to Joe's upcoming Ferrari 288 GTO bible!! And any other book he writes, for that matter.
