About the Author
With a background in TV and radio, Debbie has also previously run her own importing company and worked in finance. In 2009 she returned to the job she loves - presenting on QVC UK, whilst writing romance for the thinking woman! "When you're 12 and your teacher says 'please finish your creative writing homework - I'm dying to find out what happens...' it makes you think about your future. So I promptly signed up to become... an accountant. Then a radio and TV presenter, now a QVC shopping channel presenter. But at least I get to do a weekly blog - (12,000-17,000 views per week as at March 2013) - always longer than they should be, 'cos - of course - I'm supposed to be writing! 'Serial writing course attender', RNA New Writers' Scheme, and script-writer wannabe, I am loving having finally finished my first romantic novel ('Hawaiian Affair'). There's another book called 'Till the Fat Lady Slims' which pops up from time to time from second hand sellers - creating the soft copy and uploading it to Amazon is on the list! It's a self-help book based on 'freedom eating' - body-signals and freedom of choice. Plus there's a always my only paid commission (so far) - good old 'Clive the Camel' - a very short kids' story, broadcast by Buena Vista (Disney) 'Rise and Shine' breakfast show from the early 90's. Considering the file was written about eight computers ago, it's a tall order! My second novel will be based on 'how to find a husband' and it's going to be a script first - with a time-slip plot, partly current day, party 1930's. Valentine's Surprise, my first upload here, is based on an original short story written for QVC UK viewers and blog readers around Feb 14th 2010. Enjoy it! This book was a wonderful read! I loved the playing between character! I couldn't put it down and read it in 3 days while on vacation this summer (had to stop to sleep and feel my fiancé and kids!) I was even reading it on the beach while my family swam! Look forward to reading the prequel! Take care, Sam :-)

About the Author
Beverly DeVries, Ed.D., has been teaching at Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma since 1993. She teaches reading diagnosis and primary and elementary literature/language arts. In all her courses, she demonstrates how teachers can use authentic assessment and instruction, using quality children's literature. She is presently on the Standards and Ethics Committee of the International Reading Association (IRA) and is the reading specialist on the Oklahoma Commission Program Advisory Board. She presents workshops on Writing Successful Reading Program Reports at the state and national level.

DeVries received her Ed.D. from Oklahoma State University. Before beginning her university teaching career, she spent most of her years in the middle school, teaching composition and reading. It was during those years that she recognized the importance of early literacy intervention.

Goals - 10 Years Later

I recently came accross this book in my personal library. Gary signed it for me on June 4, 1994. Now I know why I didn't trash it with all the other self-help books! Answer the questions in this book today; check back in 6 months, 2 years, or for me... 10 years later. It is amazing to see just how answering the questions in this book can help you find the right direction, learn about who you are and who and where you want to be. I am still acheiving my goals and setting new ones. We didn't have goal-setting classes when I went to school. I hope they teach this in our schools today. Setting goals, whether it be to write a paper for a school project or start your own company, is the most powerful thing we can do for ourselves. Thanks, Gary, for giving us this guideline by which to plan our future.

This Book Really Makes You Think about All Areas of Your Life

I was concerned about this book being "dated," but was intrigued enough to buy it because it seemed to cover areas not addressed by other books. It covers 10 areas - Personal, Health, Family, Recreation, Friends, Community, Career, Financial, Household, and Spiritual. The questions are finite enough to be answered in 1 to 2 sentences, but taken collectively they are very comprehensive. I have always struggled with goal setting in the past because I never really knew where to start. It's great to ask "what do you want to do?" or "where do you want to be 5 years from now?" but (as this book illustrates) a lot of self-examination and creative thinking needs to happen before you can answer those questions. I definitely recommend this book, but would qualify that recommendation. You should be ready to make a commitment of time to answer all the question and you should strive to be brutally honest. Also, be prepared for some uncomfortable feelings. You shouldn't be afraid to seek a counselor or spiritual advisor to discuss some of things that might come up as you go through this book.

Consumed My Whole Day - Very Enjoyable Read & Interesting

I had this pre-ordered after reading the WSJ article. It came yesterday around noon and I finished it at 4:00 AM this morning, with few breaks within that time frame. It wasn't the plan for my day, but I don't regret changing my day around to read this book.

I would say any book that holds my interest like that deserves a 5-start rating, though there are a few things that I'd tweak to get it closer to perfection. My official score, being a tough grader, is a 4.6/5.0 and I wouldn't resell it for twice what I paid ... especially now that it's fully highlighted and sticky-noted throughout (which makes the book more valuable to me now because I've identified the portions that spoke directly to me and my own experiences).

I really enjoyed Scott's independent thinking and challenges of conventional wisdom throughout this book, especially as it contrasts with other self-help, goal-setting or business advice books. For instance, choosing an opportunity for which one has some sort of inherent advantage rather than blindly prescribing "you can do whatever you want" appeals to my pragmatic mind. I have wrestled with this exact conclusion within the past year as I work through my own list of new ideas and opportunities, so I enjoyed that perspective as it resonates with my own thinking.

I really enjoyed the thinking on pg. 40, which is fully highlighted, less perhaps a couple sentences. This is where Scott talks about his mental model of not wanting to sell his time due to limited upside and finding a product that is infinitely scalable. I appreciated this candidness, which allows the reader to better understand the later "luck" and apparent rapid success of Dilbert. It's clear to me, Scott's success was a lifetime in the making, the product of continued experimentation and the tenacity to stay at it. This whole book was helpful to me, as my model is exactly the same and the road to success is anything but certain when you're placing bets on what the public wants. Having a system that embraces and anticipates failure, in particular, is an essential tool to avoid letting temporary results bleed over into derailing what could be a highly successful longer-term career choice.

Pg. 88, talking about when to quit and how successful ventures often have SOME element of success early-on also resonated with me, and is another page that is more yellow than white after reading this book. These comments also directly resonated with some false-starts I've had, where I correctly pulled the plug after minimal investment of time because things just did not feel right almost from the get-go. I felt poorly about pulling the red handle so early while I was ejecting, but now looking back I know I was practicing the exact type of discipline one needs to practice when trying totally new things. Plan on a good chunk of your initial tests, ideas and hypotheses being off the mark and blindly plowing time and effort at soft-starts is a recipe for disaster. One of my favorite quotes in the book is "Persistence is useful, but there's no point in being an idiot about it." That got a "lol!"

I also appreciated Scott's thoughts on useful core skills, especially psychology. This topic has become more and more interesting to me after sluffing through Pscych 202 in college, when it seems like a diversion from more useful topics. I now see how important that is, and also how little I know in this universe of knowledge. The terms page of psychological topics is a lifetime of potential study in itself, so the book leads you to new domains of study if you so choose.

Scott urges the reader to not accept anything at face value, and my personal model embraces a good chunk of this body of wisdom with a few of my own twists. Any book that holds your interest and gives you new things to think about is worth owning and reading, in my opinion. This book satisfies that criteria with ease. The book was a joy to read

His key ideas are easy to follow because he keeps it simple and Scott Adams writes in a clear and witty manner

For example the chapter on applying a system vs setting goals and trying to follow them was worth the price of the book many times over for me (and this is reinforced through the book). In his own words goals are a reach-it-and-be-done situation (where you are often waiting to achieve it someday in the future) whereas a system is something you do on a regular or daily basis with a reasonable expectation that doing so will get you to a better place in life. Wanting better health or wanting to lose 10 kg are goals. Being active everyday is a system. One is tied to another - but goals people are fighting the feeling of discouragement at each turn and the systems people are feeling good every-time they apply their system.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone smart and weary of reading tired cliches in the self-help genre. The book is a breath of fresh air!

An Almost Successful Book about Success

Scott Adams's How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life is almost a success. In it Adams tells us about he succeeded and offers his readers his advice on how to be both successful and happy.

Adams is at his best when he writes about figuring out how things work and what is important. Readers of his popular blog will recognize such topics as the moist robot, the single most important metric to measure, the five most important factors for happiness, how to thrive without using freewill, and other such topics.

One of his key principles is to distinguish goals from systems. Generally, it's better to pursue a system to get what you want rather than to pursue a goal. Goals are generally bad things as they focus you on what you have not accomplished and therefore feel negative. Unfortunately his discussion of the difference between goals and systems is confused and unclear. He seems to be saying that the reader's goal should be to come with a system that works.

I do appreciate that Adams consistently urges the reader to experiment, to be open minded, and not to follow the advice of cartoonists. The focus should be on what works for you. His humility is a welcome relief from much of the Success literature.

Some parts of the book, especially in the middle chapters, read like annotated lists constructed quickly from Internet searches. Other parts of the book are much better and many of Adams's insights are interesting, captivating, and even brilliant. The tone of this book is quite serious - there are even research footnotes - and it is clear that Adams believes he has something important to share with the reader. Fortunately much of the book is entertaining and includes humorous examples to lighten the occasionally sententious tone of some pronouncements.

Overall this is a useful and interesting book. I look forward to testing some of his suggestions and seeing if they improve my life.

(Note: The Kindle edition is satisfactory, though navigation to the footnotes and back to the text works inconsistently.)

Very touching and emotional stories, they are realistic with a powerful meaning of life. It's rare to find a well written book, expecially for people who are approaching English and need to read understandable but not banal books. It is an interesting lecture for everyone, I strongly recommend this book wheter you are a native English or not.

Any title containing the words mass graves portends some tough reading, and Koff's unblinking, direct memoir is not lacking in ghastliness. One of her aims, however, is to contrast her interior reactions to her work of exhuming and examining the victims of the Balkan and Rwandan massacres of the early 1990s with the meticulous professionalism needed to conduct it. Koff's observation that "when I analyze human remains I am interested, not repulsed" is shown in her objective descriptive writing about particular victims' physical characteristics and traumas. Away from the grave or autopsy table, however, Koff allows glimpses of the mental effort her professionalism requires by relating her numerous nightmares and manifestations of stress. She accepts this burden out of a deeply idealistic motivation--her hope that her career in forensic anthropology will reduce human rights violations in the world. Important for Anthro Students

I was surprised to read such negative reviews for a book that I dearly love and have bought twice (after one copy was loaned and not returned). Maybe it's just an anthropology thing. As an anthro grad student who wants to work in the same types of situation that Ms. Koff describes, her book gives insight into her experiences.

This is not a technical book, in fact it reads more like a memoir. So don't expect detailed excavation information, that's not what this book is. And Ms. Koff is young when she goes on these digs (she is just out of her bachelors when she travels to Rwanda). For those who may not know anything about anthropology, this is a big deal. People without a masters degree or with little field experience aren't usually part of these recovery efforts. Ms. Koff was lucky and competent enough to have worked with good professors who had connections and helped her to get on the UN mission. This is not to say she isn't a good scientist, she is, but as many in the field (and in life) know, half the battle is knowing the right person.

Some people seemed to want to see some strong emotional responses by Ms. Koff, and I can understand for most people excavating a mass grave in Rwanda would be horribly traumatic. But this is why some people do this work and others don't. You wouldn't expect a doctor or a firegfighter or a soldier to be so wrapped up in the emotion of the moment that they can't focus and get the job done. She is affected, she discusses what she is seeing, imagines what would she do if something as awful as genocide happened to her, how would she save her mother who suffers from some physical limitations making a quick escape impossible. These are the reactions of a forensic anthropologist who has worked on two long and difficult mass recovery missions.

There is a place for intense sorrow and grief. The book by the head of the UN security mission (his name escapes me) who worked tirelessly and with little resources to save people during the killing in Rwanda is a good example.

Ms. Koff's efforts begin several years after the killings ended. She is an anthropologist who knew what she was getting into and wanted to take on this difficult task to give something of the lost back to their loved ones. This is what a forensic anthropologist does. Becoming overwhelmed by her experiences does a disservice to the same people she is trying to help. She is affected, she feels the responsibility of the mission and her actions and the loss of lives keenly, but she sucks it up and gets the job done. If the Rwandans and Kosovars can bear their losses and continue on, the least she can do is what is expected of her and help them recover their relatives. And this is what she does.

She's competent,confident, but young and you can see the issues that occur when a small group of people are doing dangerous and emotionally wrenching work. This book is a must for anthropology students, especially those wanting to work in mass disaster and human rights situations.

Great Read

Really enjoyed this book. It was assigned as a textbook for my anthropology course, but once I started reading I could not put it down. Cleo Kidd managed to involve the reader in her life with this book so much so I could see the remains she studied. Truly rejuvenated my desire in anthropology and forensics.
